ACHS provides warm, safe place for Treats on the Town

By Ellen Zornes

The Chamber of Commerce would like to thank everyone involved for the success of Treats on the Town Halloween night!

It would not have been possible without Debbie Selby for all her work in getting it together, Principal Troy Young, Supt. Pamela Stephens and Asst. Principal Chad Parnell. And of course our wonderful businesses and community organizations for supplying lots of candy and the approximately 1,500 trick or treaters and their parents.

It was so nice to be in a dry, warm place for Halloween.

Fall Back Driving Tips for end of Daylight Saving Time

By Lynda Lambert/Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - With the end of daylight saving time this weekend, motorists will be presented with challenges during their commutes that could impact pedestrian safety. AAA East Central and the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) recommend motorists and pedestrians make changes in their daily habits to adjust to reduced visibility caused by sun glare in the morning, and earlier darkness in the evening.

"While the extra hour of sleep may be nice, the time change can be deadly for pedestrians," said Theresa Podguski, director of legislative affairs, AAA East Central. "Twilight is one of the most challenging times of the day to drive, so extra precautions can go a long way in the weeks ahead."

Defend against Chronic Wasting Disease this fall

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - As hunters return to the woods and fields for the fall seasons, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is increasing its efforts to monitor the state for chronic wasting disease (CWD) at the same time.

Seventeen years ago, the department recognized an encroaching threat to Kentucky's deer and elk herds and took steps to prevent the spread of CWD to the state. Now, in 2019, the agency is calling on hunters to be the next line of defense.

Chronic wasting disease, the always-fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk, moose and caribou, has spread to more than half of the states in the U.S. since its discovery in the late 1960s in Colorado.

It has never been detected in Kentucky but virtually surrounds it. Six of the seven bordering states have CWD.

Gov. announces $37.9M in VOCA grant funding

Federal funding will support crisis intervention services across Kentucky

By Nicole Burton/Mike Wynn

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin joined with the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and victim advocates from across the state on Wednesday to announce $37.9 million in federal grants to support crisis intervention services for victims of crime.

In total, 135 Kentucky programs have received funding this year through the federal Victims of Crime Act grant program, known as VOCA. The awards mark a 50 percent increase over the amount provided in 2018 and a 511 percent increase compared to 2015.

Local area recipients include:
  • Adair County Attorney, $80,073
  • Green County Fiscal Court, $63,182
  • Lake Cumberland Children's Advocacy Center, $201,636
  • Russell County Fiscal Court, $58,553
  • Taylor County Fiscal Court, $60,994
VOCA funding originates from the federal Crime Victims Fund, which collects funds from criminal fines, forfeitures, special assessments, and gifts or donations and is not reliant on taxpayer money. The grants support programs that provide direct services to victims, including crisis counseling, shelter, therapy and support, and advocacy in the criminal justice system, among other efforts.

T.J. Regional Health has been named among the top-tier exemplary practices nationwide in rural healthcare transformation.

By Stacey Biggs

In 2016, T.J. Regional Health published a Community Needs Assessment and Strategic Implementation Plan that identified five priority health issues -- cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, lung cancer, and drug abuse and addiction -- and implemented a number of outreach programs and initiatives to address each issue and expand access to care. The results of those efforts have led to a letter of commendation from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

"I personally commend your practice for producing significant results in achieving the aims of the Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative (TCPi)," stated Robert Flemming, PhD, director of the initiative from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. "Due to your superior performance, the National Rural Accountable Care Consortium Transformation Network certifies your practice as a TCPi Exemplary practice."
