Lawmakers hear about hemp industry challenges

By Rebecca Hanchett

Frankfort, KY - Six years ago, the Kentucky General Assembly created a framework for production of industrial hemp. Now the state is a hemp production leader, with around 26,000 acres planted this year alone.

But the growth of hemp and hemp processing in Kentucky under 2013 SB 50 and the 2014 U.S. Farm Bill has presented what Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles calls "growing pains," with farmers and processors facing some uncertainty from both federal regulators and financial lenders.

Although the federal government no longer classifies hemp - a type of cannabis plant--as a controlled substance under federal law, it still regulates the sale of cannabis and cannabis-derived products such as the increasingly popular CBD (or cannabidiol).

Buckle up, put phones down to increase roadway safety

Kentucky Office of Highway Safety launches new campaign to reduce crashes, fatalities

By Erin Eggen/Naitore Djigbenou

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is driving home a safety message to motorists aimed at preventing crashes by encouraging two life-saving actions behind the wheel- buckling up and putting down the phone.

Launching today, the state's first Buckle Up Phone Down campaign features videos, radio spots, digital advertising and a new dedicated website, kyhighwaysafety.com, to promote the initiative.

"The campaign offers compelling stories from credible sources urging drivers to buckle up and put the phone down," said KOHS Acting Director Jason Siwula. "We believe that if all drivers practice these two, simple behaviors, we will see a dramatic reduction in fatalities and injuries on our roadways."

According to KOHS, each year in Kentucky, distracted driving results in more than 50,000 crashes, more than 15,000 injuries and approximately 200 deaths. Distracted driving behaviors, like texting, emailing and talking, are discouraged and drivers are advised to not interact with their phone.

Mystery solved: Tracks in dry grass mark lateral drainage lines

Mystery resolved - "This is what happens when your ground gets so dry from an extended drought. The markings are septic tank lateral drainage lines coming from the septic tank! You can trace them all the way to the septic tank. I’ve only seen this happen twice in my lifetime." - James

Adair County 4-H Outdoor Adventure Club

By Tony Rose

To kick off National 4-H Week, Adair County 4-H is looking at starting a new Outdoor Adventure Club for youth and adults of Adair County. This group will have many different areas that they will be participating in. The group will be taking part in the new 4-H Stream Team study to track water quality throughout our area. Other programs related to environmental study will also be included. The group will participate in possible canoe/kayaking, hiking and other outdoor activities.

To get the new program started, there needs to be at least 10 youth and 2 adults who would like to participate in the program. With this type of program it is necessary to have adults involved and assist with the club. Without at least 2 adults, we will not be able to offer this new program.

If you are interested in this new club, please fill out the survey at this link: uky.az1.qualtrics.com.

Letter: Remembering Hunter Durham

Doug McCammish writes:
Most everyone in Adair County and a big part of Kentucky will have Hunter Durham stories. Hunter had dozens or hundreds of them himself. I only knew him for 18 years and still can probably tell a "few." Just bring up Yellowstone National Park, for instance, or his uncle in Alabama or the older couple who lived in the country and taught the "townie" how to fish or his time as a basketball manager at UK under Coach Rupp.

Hunter was immensely proud of his four grandchildren and their accomplishments and successes. Witness the recent story about Kate and her white coat and Alex and his law position. We were privileged to host Kate for a night not long ago and have prayed for Bradley for so long we feel as if we know him.

Among his many accomplishments and positions, Hunter taught the men's Sunday School class at Columbia Baptist for maybe 100 years and he let me teach a few in his place. One Saturday evening, Rob Durham called and said "Dad asked me to call you and see if you can teach tomorrow." I laughed, being sure at the time that Hunter was pulling one on me - calling late Saturday to teach the next morning. But no, Hunter was in the hospital with a serious problem and Rob was not joking. He recovered from that one and some others. Despite all his medical problems, he was such a positive person. Thanks be to God for Hunter Durham. --Doug

One room schoolhouse volunteer work update, plan

Another work day is planned for October 19, 2019 from 7amCT until the last of the work is completed. All volunteers are welcome and one more day is expected to put the project very nearly complete. We hope to celebrate this accomplishment very soon.

By Mike Watson, President, Adair Heritage Association

The second work day on the Flatwood's Rosenwald School building was a great success. Workers began gathering around 7amCT on Saturday, October 5, 2019 for another day of restoration and preservation on the only remaining Rosenwald building in Adair County, and one of the better examples in the state.

Two weeks previous a fine group began the work and since that time several hours have been put toward the clean-up, repair and paint removal in preparation for coats of life-preserving white paint on the outside as well as the inside.
