Letter: Ben Hur was a gasoline powered paddle boat

Robert Cumming writes:
The Ben Hur was a shallow draft, upper Cumberland River sternwheel paddle boat powered by a gasoline engine operating in the first decades of the twentieth century. The gasoline engine was a practical choice for power on this boat as automobiles and trucks began appearing more and more in the Cumberland valley as gasoline became more widely available. --Robert
Comments re photo 85393 Mystery Can you provide the place and any details
Robert, thank you for writing! The Ben Hur, a featured picture at the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, offers the following information below the photo, "...built in 1870 by Andrew Loy and others. The family of Andrew and Elizabeth Loy lived on the boat for about 3 years. During that time the boat was docked at Blackfish Landing and the children walked to school at Freedom, about 5 miles each day. Eulis Wooldridge, grandson of Andrew Loy, related a story of how they would often have to get off the Ben Hur and move big rocks out of the river channel so the boat could pass through."

Thoresen's strike pushes LWC women's soccer past Thomas More

By Christopher Coombs

The No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team won their second straight Mid-South Conference match by a score of 1-0 as they take down Thomas More (Ky.) at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

The Blue Raiders (6-2-1, 2-0-0 MSC) would strike in the 71st minute with a goal that proved to be enough. Emelie Liljered put together a brilliant effort down the right sideline to create space before sending off a low cross into the penalty area. The pass found its way to a waiting Alicia Thoresen who took a few touches before finishing near post for the score.

October 7, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

This article was first published in the October 7, 1977 edition of the Daily Statesman. Topics inluded Melvin Traylor, mayoral motorcades, a proposal for a Town Gardener, and a story from the late Dr. Phil Aaron. --Pen

By Ed Waggener

A marker for Melvin Traylor
It would be appropriate for the state to erect a marker in the Breeding community honoring Melvin Traylor. Mrs. Ralph Akin, Louisville, the former Ritchie Traylor of Breeding, was in the news office Thursday to buy a copy of the Adair County News of September 20 which carried a reprint of a story about Traylor, the Adair County farm boy who rose to the presidency of the First National Bank of Chicago and was groomed as Illinois' favorite son candidate- and a serious one-for the Presidency in 1932. And, the article said, "He never lost touch with the soil."

Traylor's homeplace is now owned by Noah Traylor. Nobody lives there today. It is located on the Lowgap Road out of Breeding. Perhaps a historical marker would best be seen in downtown Breeding, on Highway 61. The story of Melvin Traylor is an inspirational one to Adair Countians. I hope school children aren't allowed to forget about the local man who might have been President. Mrs. Akin is the daughter of Joe Traylor, who was a first cousin of Melvin Traylor. Incidentally, the Democrats nominated another man in 1932-Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

We're trying to run it right today
Never send a monster to do the work of an evil scientist! I should know that, and the printing rule that, "if it can go wrong, it will."

Letter: Need help appraising old furniture

Maury E Lewis writes:
I am in need of a person that can tell me something about a piece of old furniture I am wanting to sell. It is made from steel and the seat is a piece of canvas from the 30's or 40's. My husband, who is 76, used to bounce in it when he was a small child in Pittsburg, PA. It doesn't rock it bounces.

It sat on his grandmother's front porch none of the children want it. It is hard to get out of at our age and size and it is heavy. --Maury E Lewis, 270-634-2092

LWC Men's soccer defeats Thomas More 6-0 in MSC match

By Christopher Coombs

The No. 9-ranked Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team defeated Thomas More (Ky.) 6-0 in Mid-South Conference action at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

It would only take 15 minutes for the Blue Raiders to score their first goal of the contest. Off a Lindsey Wilson shot, Amin Fernouchi gathered his own rebound and finished far post in traffic for the score.

Just two minutes later, LWC would find the back of the net for the second time. Bruno Henrique dribbled up the middle of the field into TMU's defensive third. He played a through ball to Akean Shackleford who slipped past his defender before beating a charging keeper.

The Blue Raiders would continue to control the action for the rest of the half as they finished with an impressive 17 shots, five on goal while limiting the Saints to just one shot.

Big Windy, KY made news in the early 1900s

Some incidents at Big Windy, 1898-1909. Big Windy location is specified as near Milltown, and news of the day backed up the story of it as a tough section of Adair County.

By JIM

A front page news piece about a brutal murder in October 1930 gave the location of Big Windy as "near Milltown on the Greensburg Road." A brief article in the June 18, 1902 News about the arrest of a Big Windy resident charged with bootlegging disdainfully referred to the area as "a locality where soiled doves, whisky and crap shooting form one tribune haides."
