TC Energy says noises do not pose a safety issue

Mike Keltner, Director of Adair Co. Emergency Management, forwards this message that TC Energy has released about the pipeline noises:

TC Energy representatives have been actively working on a solution to remedy the sounds heard by residents in Adair County, Kentucky. These sound waves do not pose a safety issue, and we want to ensure residents that after extensive assessment, the integrity of our pipe and system are safe to operate. Since the issue was first discovered, engineers and operations personnel have been on site conducting tests and have determined that the sound heard by nearby residents is being caused by sound waves reverberating along the pipe.

We will continue to actively monitor the situation and investigate possible ways to address the noise levels. We appreciate the input from the community, and we have heard them and are working toward addressing their concerns. We will continue to keep community leaders informed going forward.

CJ coverage of gas pipeline noise

By Billy Kobin, Louisville Courier Journal

Officials in Adair County, said they are seeking to determine the cause of a noise coming from a natural gas pipeline that runs through the area. The Adair County Emergency Management agency said in a news release Thursday the county sheriff was notified Sept. 24 of a noise coming from the Columbia Gulf Transmission Pipeline in the area of Knifley Road and Robinson Ridge Road. In February 2014, an underground section of Columbia Gulf Transmission's Line 200 exploded near Ky. 76 in Knifley. The blast -- not far from where the recent noise was heard -- left a 60-foot crater in the ground, destroyed two homes, injured two people and forced 20 residents to evacuate.

Letter: Jeff Johnson right about location of Big Windy

Mike Watson writes:
Jeff Johnson has the location of 'Big Windy' correct. The area was once commonly known to be no place for a peace-loving person to wander. There was a time, a century ago or more, when men met in that vicinity to gamble, among other things.

There were at least two men killed in this area in the early 1900s. One killing, in 1903, was over twenty cents in a crap game. Illegal liquor sales were also common and the revenue officers often made raids there. That's not to say there weren't good folk living in the area, too. --MW
