KY Fire Marshal promotes Campus Fire Safety Month

By Krista Locke

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky State Fire Marshal urges parents and college students to pause this September during Campus Fire Safety Month to implement fire prevention strategies for off-campus student housing.

Since fire fatalities most often occur in buildings with disabled fire safety systems, Haney recommends that students regularly change batteries in existing smoke detectors and ensure a detector is installed on each floor and each bedroom. Students should also plan two escape routes from bedrooms, and purchase an escape ladder if necessary.

Because cooking is the leading cause of home fires, Haney encourages students to have stoves inspected, to be alert and remain in the kitchen while cooking. Appliances can also pose a risk. Inspecting appliances and avoiding use of numerous extension cords reduces the risk of off campus living fires.

Wojcik fired 15 pars on her round while managing two birdies on the front nine with just one blemish - a bogey -- on her final hole of the day on the par-four 18th.

Milligan is in first place after scoring a 296 at the Johnson City Country Club, a par-72, 5,872-yard design.

Letter: Two ee's in Fee

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
This is a great photo Linda, but according to the church sign, the name is spelled Fee - two ee's and I think that is to honor John G. Fee, an abolitionist, educator and minister. He deserves to be remembered! Whoever built the church and named it, I think, meant for Fee to be remembered, and Fe does not do that. One of his accomplishments was educating black soldiers and their families at Camp Nelson during the Civil War where many of the soldiers were from central Kentucky. That's how I think people who named the church knew about Fee (soldiers passed along the stories) and the many ways Fee worked to do away with slavery. I think Fee's belief of equality for all people was passed down to those who built the church and chose Fee's name to honor him.

Fee also founded Berea College to be an integrated coeducational school. For all he did, I think, people who built the church considered him a "saint" (santa) - even though this is a Baptist Church.

Why do we seem to think the people who built the church sign did not know correct spelling and we need to change it? Maybe those people thought that surely people would remember John Fee. --Vonnie

KYTC launches new online portal for permit requests

The new system features real-time, intelligent routing and auto-issuance, designed to be more efficient for overweight/over-dimensional permit requests

By Jordan Smith

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) launched a new online system today for issuing travel permits for overweight/over-dimensional (OW/OD) vehicle drivers. Using verified, real-time data, the program provides intelligent routing based on road closures, vehicle weight, and vehicle dimensions. It also features automated issuance for common permit types distributed by the Cabinet.

"By moving the majority of the process online, we're making it simple for OW/OD drivers to travel on Kentucky roadways," said Department of Vehicle Regulation Commissioner Matt Henderson. "Now, almost every permit can be issued instantly from your computer at work or home, 24/7/365. We're cutting red tape to make the permitting process more efficient for staff and more convenient for customers to haul everything from oversize equipment to boats."

Additional upgrades include the ability for users to check the status of their application with real-time updates, electronic payment options, and online renewals for annual permits.

Current system users will be redirected from the old website and required to register in the new system. KYTC will no longer accept applications via fax or email.

HISTORY MONDAY: Education, Business and Politics

By Mike Watson
Adair County Historian

The Keith Chapel School, a one room frame building containing eight grades, was destroyed by fire Wednesday, December 30 [1959]. Cause of the blaze was undetermined. It apparently started sometime during the night and was still burning early the following morning.

There was no insurance on the building. Since this is one of the grade schools that will be replaced by the grade centers to be constructed in the future, the building will not be replaced. The pupils, there are eleven of them enrolled, are being transported by bus to various other schools near them. The only heat in the school was a wood burning stove.
[The Keith Chapel students would eventually be part of the Sparksville Grade Center -- MW]

Business changes of the day

New IGA Store Opens in Kroger's Location -- Mr. J.D. Harper, former owner and manager of Harper's Drive-In Market on Campbellsville Street, is now the owner-manager of the new IGA Store, located in the building formerly occupied by Kroger.
