Mike Watson: A note on Williams or Montpelier Academy

By Mike Watson, Adair County Historian

This academy was operated in the late 1800s at Montpelier. Elder Z.T. Williams and Charles E. Powell, of Shelby City, KY, as principal, advertised in 1890 that a high school would be opened at Williams' Academy on the first Monday in January 1891. Tuition would be $1.25 for those in the primary grades, $1.50 for those in common school, and $2.00 for high school. Board would be from $1.75 to $2.00 per week. The building was described as "elegant." It burned in February 1901. At that time Miss Fannie Smythe was teaching there and the children were at dinner when the alarm was sounded. A new school was built or adopted. In 1918 G.G. Coffey bought the old building and moved it to a site near the present Montpelier store where it was used as a storehouse.
