Lichen in photo is Cladonia Rangiferina: Reindeer Moss But it is not a moss as it's name indicates. It's a symbiotic organism, part fungus, part alga. How this one arrived on Fortune Street? - "This little new individual almost certainly came to rest on this dead limb when the wind most likely helped it spread its tiny reproductive packets of fungal cells wrapping a few algal cells. The fungus has no roots, stems, or leaves and absorbs water and minerals from its surroundings by use of threads that help anchor it. - ALAN REED Comments re photo 58301 What is it Deer lichen By Alan Reed The species shown is Cladonia rangiferina, commonly known as Reindeer lichen or Reindeer "moss"---though it is not a moss at all. It is not even a plant. The name comes from the the bluish-green body is that of a fungus. The fungal part (the visible part) has an interesting partnership with a one-celled alga, which it harbours inside its tissues. Robert E. Hutchison, Frankfort, KY (d. 23 Dec 2014) Bob lived a wonderful life. He was the father of Ramie Hutchison, Columbia, KY. He loved his family, friends and especially his grandson, Evan. He was a native of Pennsylvania who moved to Kentucky in the 1970s and working first with WLEX-Tv in Lexington, KY. He retired in 2005 after a career with Kentucky Educational Television, where he was a video engineer and was known as the "Golden Voice" of KET. Happy Tail: No coal in their stockings In spite of a hectic week, it was one Peg Schaeffer and the dogs at Sugarfoot got a taste of the real meaning of Christmas, thanks to so many people, including Greensburg teachers Alyson Thompson and Kaitlyn Taylor, Vicki Shivel of Russell Springs, Ariana Wooten, Larry Smith of the WAVE, Dr. King's staff, and Community Medical Services. For the dogs, not one got coal in its stocking, not even Darryl, the lovable but mischievous permanent resident at Sugarfoot. With that, here's this week's Happy Tail - short but sweet. "I have had a week like you'd never believe. I have been flat out since Wednesday. Today I took in 6 Chihuahuas, a German Shepherd, a parrot, two love birds, and a parakeet - all from the same person. None of the dogs have been spayed or neutered, the Chihuahuas are in sad shape and the German Shepherd has been tied most of his life. I will be posting them for adoption as soon as they are in better health," Peg wrote with this week's column, one we think everyone will say is one of her best. -CM Click on headline for complete column.
