JIM: The Horse and the Hen

Animal odd couple

By JIM

The strange saga of Ruby Yates' turkey and rooster brought to mind an equally odd Adair County companionship reported threescore and nine years before that of Chanticleer and the gobbler. The following article appeared in the May 20, 1908 edition of the Adair County News and occupied most of the ink devoted to the Dirigo community newsletter.

Thus spake the News:
Mr. Warfield Estes, of this place, is the owner of a very peculiar hen. She insists on roosting upon the back of one of his horses. He had noticed this for several nights at the barn, and so one night just to test what she would do if he left the hen in the pasture. The hen finding that the horse was not coming to the barn deliberately went to the pasture and perched herself upon the back of the horse and there she stayed until morning. Mr. A.D. Stotts and family who reside with Mr. Estes vouch for the above. They also state that all attempts to baffle the hen so far have failed. If there is another fowl in existence that will match the hen, let's hear from it.

Animal Odd Couple: The 1977 Turkey & Rooster

Found this Barnyard Review in something written 37 years ago.
Barnyard review
Ruby Yates has a rooster she doesn't understand and a turkey gobbler which she doesn't understand either. She doesn't understand why the rooster wants to roost at night on the turkey gobbler?s back. And she doesn?t understand why the turkey puts up with it. But it's the truth. I've known Ruby a long time, and I?ve never caught her exaggerating.
The item was in "Around Adair," by Ed Waggener in the Columbia Daily Statesman, October 1, 1977. Ruby Yates (1924-2011) was one of Adair County's most beloved citizens.

Poetry by Robert Stone: High risk for small reward

High risk for small reward
- a sonnet for the birthday of Jake Abell
Just as gold-plated is temptation free
as none will chose high risk for small reward,
kingdomless rulers issue no decree
expecting paper crowns with one accord.

Always there looms this bit about the myrrh
bitter to those expecting future loss,
enticing bold fearless entrepreneur
looking for permanence beneath the gloss.

Lucky the seer who sees beyond the stars,
lucky the wise who chooses poverty
lucky the gentle ignorant of bars,
lucky the strong enduring mockery.

Better not ask for gifts to honor one
illuminating intents truly spun.

- Robert Stone, 25 December 2014
