A Christmas Rifle Story: The day the Devil won out, a little while

He knew he wasn't to shoot red birds, blue birds, robins and doves. But one day, hunting was bad and the Devil spotted a Dove and tempted him to shoot it. And the Devil's powerful sway won out for a while. The Devil said he could shoot the dove and no one will ever know. And the boy believed him! But after the dove plummeted to the ground, there was an incident between boy and dove which changed his life forever.

After reading Ed's story and Joyce Coomer's comments on must do and must not of guns, I began to remember some of my precious times with a gun.

I was permitted to shoot a gun at a very early age while someone else stood by. And then the big moment came when I got a gun under the Christmas tree. But there were many restrictions with that gun.

Critique: on the Christmases on Jamestown Hill story

Comments re article 72109 The Christmases when nobody got shot on Jamestown Hill

Ben Arnold writes:
Beautifully written, as only a colorful wordsmith could do. It is time for you to write a bigger version of your memories, add a little Hemingway, Faulkner, and a word or so from Lee's "To kill a Mockingbird", then some photos from Linda and poems from Billy Joe. This Thing could have legs! I will even talk to Matt, maybe "A Christmas Story" needs refreshing???< BR>
I sometimes think of CM as the old oak in the village center that has an expanded ring that marks the history of all the postings. A blessed Christmas to all your readers. --Ben Arnold
Ben Arnold: Thanks. Appreciate the comments. Do hope Matt comes back to film here. But there hundreds - no, 1,000s - of better writers here now and the situation gets better every day. Thanks. - EW

Sputnik Aluminum Christmas Tree her favorite, too

She concurs with Mike & Cat, and Johnietta Jessie. Remembers fascination of tree in apartment across from her grandmother's in Chicago. Says she's glad to know there are more Sputnik Christmas tree lovers out there.

Sheila Johnson writes:
The Sputnik Christmas Tree was also my favorite tree of all times. As a child we would go to Chicago in the 60's for Christmas at my grandmothers. She lived on the 4th floor of a large apartment building and the building across the street was the image of the one she lived in. The family that lived on the 4th floor across the street from her had a colorful Sputnik Tree. I would hang my small head over the back of the couch in the dark looking out the large plate glass living room window for hours and watch that beautiful tree change colors. This has to be one of my best Christmas memories as a child. I am glad to know there are more Sputnik Tree lovers out there. - Sheila Johnson

Joyce Coomer: Advice on gun safety

Commentary about: The Christmases when nobody got shot on Jamestown Hill

By Joyce Coomer

Hmmm . . . seems no one ever told you the main point of marksmanship.
ALWAYS be sure there is nothing behind (or near) what you're aiming at that you don't want to shoot.
I've been handling guns since I was five or six years old.

Christmas Memories: Remembers wheel magic on Aluminum tree

Writer, a kindred spirit of Mike & His Cat, vis-a-vis Sputnik Aluminum Christmas Trees, remembers her Aunt Gelina England's aluminum tree which had the spinning wheel attachment which made the tree turn colors. Would like to have one, but can't find one these days.

Kentucky Color: Rowetown's Central Park

This is a view of lush, green, wooded, wintertime meadows in the midst of the Rowetown Community. Although it is often times hard to find a hard and definite line between rural communities, I guess you could say that Rowetown was and is a suburb of Toria.

The Christmases when nobody got shot on Jamestown Hill

Gifts Santa should never have given: The first was a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun like the one on display in Ed's & Ed's Kentucky Auto store. The second was the Remington 550-A .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle

By Ed Waggener

Our Dad, E.P. Waggener, had a clear vision of what he wanted every child to become, and manipulated adroitly on every occasion he could to mold us in his plan.

Part of my profile, to be a well rounded man, resulted in two gifts I should never have gotten. One I desperately wanted. One I didn't want at all.

A Metcalfe County Christmas Memory: Oh, get it, Robert! Get it!

'The Christmas night when Santa brought the doll, her brothers took great pains to tie the doll to the top of the cedar Christmas tree, where a star is the usual ornament.'

Linda and I asked her mother, my favorite mother-in-law, Geniece Leftwich Marcum, which Christmas she remembered most. There was one vivid one, she said.

It was the Christmas of her first doll. It was a Christmas in the big frame farm house on "the Dillon Place" at Bellview in Metcalfe, her father, Walter Leftwich, had bought, paying his father for it with all the proceeds from a few years' tobacco crop, she remembers.

Christmas Memories: from Mike & Renea Watson

Christmas Memories and Tradition abound at homes of Adair County Historian Mike Watson and wife Renea: The Christmas Closet. The Fake Green tree he prefers in these times, but with found memories of going to the woods with Dad or Brother in childhood. The silver tree which goes up annually for one dad to his and family cat's great glee and horrification of many others. And much much more, in this delightful Christmas day reminiscence

By Mike Watson
Adair County Historian

Christmas memories are very important and most folk have one or two that come vividly to mind. I do remember several specific Christmases, but they were all good for me. I remember going to the woods with dad or my brothers and cutting a tree. This was tradition, until the fad for artificial trees came along. Then, and since, with one year as exception, we have always had a green "fake" tree. No mess, no muss. After we moved to town and settled in on High Street, we had the "Christmas closet" that housed nothing but Yuletide trimmings.

Luke 2: 8-14: A Savior is Born. The Christmas Story

From Bethlehem: A Savior has been born in Bethehem, also called the City of David. New Baby is hailed as Christ the Lord. MAP

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone around about them: And they were sore afraid . . .

And the angel said unto them, Fear not, for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Luke 2: 8-14
