Peggy Fudge answers call for History, Please - re Bomar Heights

Wonders what is going on at the location. And most everybody is in the dark on the Lindsey Wilson Cycling Course. Something big is happening there, somewhat out of view of for Bomar Heights traffic. - EW

Peggy Fudge writes:
I believe a Mr. Henry(?) Garnett lived in the house that is coming down. I'm not sure about the next two houses in line, but I'm guessing Rick or Chuck Rogers could tell you. The next house up, set a little off the road, was Dorothy Duncan's, I believe. It stood empty for years and burned after the double-wide was put there. BTW, I am curious to know what is going up in place of the demolished house. - Peggy Fudge

JIM: Research origin of Bomar Heights, then College Hill

. . . away from the noise of the business section and on an elevation that commands the view in every direction. . . heretofore the happy home of ticks and chiggers.

Compiled by JIM

The following article from the February 12, 1902 Adair County News relates indirectly to the "History, Please: Who lived here in the '50s, '60s" CM photo posted today (Tuesday. December 23, 2014), Oddly enough, I came across this yesterday in the course of other research.
"In the early spring Mr. N.M. Tutt and John N. Conover will put on the market 25 or 30 one-half acre lots and if any one desires to come to our town, to be in reach of a good school [the Male & Female High School] and other conveniences not found in the country, no trouble will be in the way to secure a desirable location.

"The above mentioned property lies on the beautiful plateau south of the M. & F. High School--one of the most desirable locations in the entire town, away from the noise of the business section and on an elevation that commands the view in every direction.

"They will sell lots to desirable parties who will put up good buildings, at the lowest price. We predict that many neat cottages will soon adorn College Hill, heretofore the happy home of ticks and chiggers.

Columbia is growing--expanding, falling out of the old ruts.

A bit of Columbia, KY History: First house on Glen Mary Street?

Childhood memories of boyhood in Columbia. His father was the late Gene Overton, then pastor of the Columbia Church of Christ. Remembers his first job at the Circle R for $1.25 an hour. 'I thought I was rich,' he recalls.

By Ivan Overton

I have just recently discovered your magazine and I appreciate it so much. I grew up in Columbia, living on Appen Avenue, while my parents built a house on Glenmary Street (I believe it was the first house constructed on that street). We moved to the Glenmary house in late 1963 or early 1964.

We lived there for 10 years before moving to Bowling Green in 1973. I cherish my boyhood memories of growing up in Columbia and all the good people that I got to know. Thank you so much for your magazine.
