A Montana Christmas Story

One of the main reasons Donna and I moved to Montana was for the hunting and the winter sports. Winters in Big Sky were fantastic, with three and four feet of snow and sometimes more. Donna and I would snowmobile all over the mountains all winter long.

Carol Roberts writes:
Peg, I so enjoyed reading your article about Christmas. Thank you for sharing. I hadn't heard the story about animals speaking on Christmas Eve in many years. Carol Perkins: Where are My Glasses?

It's a problem lots of folks over 50 have: Mashing the right buttons on the fiendishly complicated microwaves. For Guy Perkins of Edmonton, KY, a stay in a luxury hotel in Birmingham, running the microwave for his nightly fix of popcorn, without glasses, was futile, yielding no popcorn - but, as one would suspect, a great Carol Perkins column on his way home, with twist.

Guy travels with his job so he most often will use Priceline for finding good deals on lodging. Most of the time he will end up in a Holiday Inn Express or an equivalent, but this time was a huge surprise. He would be staying at the Renaissance Resort at Ross Bridge in Birmingham.

Happy Tail - Christmas is coming!

And Christmas is about memories. Peg Schaeffer recalls early Christmases in Connecticut and how proud she was to get the 'mink' stole 1958, the tradition of cutting the family's own Christmas tree, the homemade ornaments, a dog named Elvis who OD'ed (or should have after eating 2 pounds of the stuff) on chocolate, Christmas Eves in church, the legend that animals can talk on Christmas Eve, and her favorite Christmas ornaments: The Nativity Scene

By Peg Schaeffer

This week as I was packing the box of Chip’s Christmas presents to send to him in Connecticut I got to thinking about past Christmas’. When I was a little girl we put the tree up on Christmas Eve. We would decorate it and then put the presents under the tree. Of course the presents from Santa Claus didn’t come until I went to bed. We always went to church at midnight on Christmas Eve and it was something I always looked forward to.

Grandma’s Doll: A Hinman Family Christmas Story

The expression 'out of the mouths of babes' is frequently used to describe little ones who are not inhibited by what comes out of their mouths in the same way as adults. They have not learned to temper their speech to not offend or hurt someone's feelings. That comes with time.

My granddaughter who is now a young adult, attractive, a recent college graduate, a sharp cookie, discreet to a fault, and known for always pleasing everyone, hasn't always been so. She is the apple of her Grandpa's eye.

Tom Chaney: Shadows on the Wall of The Cave

Of Writers And Their Books: Shadows on the Wall of The Cave. Tom says Robert Penn Warren is not retelling the story of Floyd Collins but is showing us how the community reacts when tragedy strikes. This column first appeared 20 February 2009.

Shadows on the Wall of The Cave

In the dark February of 1925 while Floyd Collins was lying trapped in Sand Cave, the young writer Robert Penn Warren was just learning and practicing his craft at Vanderbilt University. His craft at that time was poetry.

So far as I know he showed no particular interest in the story which was unfolding some ninety miles north of Nashville.
