Home Safety Tips: Generator Safety

By Greg Thomas, Adair County 9-1-1 Director

Many households run generators during a power outage and homeowners should take extra precautions to avoid injury. Gasoline or diesel fuel powered generators can produce potentially deadly levels of carbon monoxide and should be operated only in well-ventilated, covered, unheated areas - never inside. You should always practice extreme caution when using a generator to power your home:
  1. Make sure the generator is listed by an independent testing organization, such as Underwriter's Laboratory (UL).
  2. Protect the generator from exposure to rain, but under no circumstances should generators be used indoors, including a garage. Do not operate the generator near any open windows or doorways.
  3. Before using a generator, make sure you have installed a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm near sleeping areas to alert you in the event of increased levels of CO in your home.
  4. Never connect a generator to the home's electrical system; instead, plug what you want to power directly into the generator.
  5. Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and maintenance schedule.

Mystery History: The Pepto-Bismol Pink Nash Rambler caper

First in so many things, Adair County and Russell Counties, KY, have not produced (many) world class criminals, as this footnote to history (Previously posted as "The Great Adair County General Store Robbery" on CM 2010-04-18 06:43:11

By Jim

The article about the Windsor store being robbed brought to mind the Great Adair County General Store Robbery, ca. 1970. The name of the store in question has long since slipped off the plate of my memory, but I believe it was the one located just west of the Hwy 80/1729 (Sano Rd.) intersection. At any rate, three not-quite genius-level desperadoes from Russell County - James, John, & Roy - took it upon themselves to relieve the store of the day's receipts.

Let's see. What could possibly go wrong?
