Messiah Moment: The Personal Impact

Lindsey Wilson College Choral Ensembles with members of The Louisville Symphony and YOU! present selections from Handel's beloved masterwork on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at 7pmCT. at Columbia Baptist Church, 201 Greensburg Street, in Columbia, KY. This presentation is patterned after Messiah sing-alongs in which the audience joins in singing the choral sections.

Most complete editions of MESSIAH are in the 250 pages range. In other words, the entire work is rather lengthy! The last full performance that I attended had a running time of just under three hours. Lord of the Rings fans loved it! (However, in case you're worried, Tuesday evening's performance draws largely from the Christmas section, about 50 minutes!)

Knowing the length of this masterwork allows us to appreciate the fact that Handel wrote MESSIAH in the space of about three weeks, between August 22 and September 14, 1741. The compositional process was an extremely intense experience. Handel rarely left his room and hardly ate during this time.

Letter: George Rice's Story Brings Back Memories

Paul Patton writes:
George Rice's well written story about hog killing brought back a lot of memories. In our family we always said that we saved everything about the hog except the squeal. We even saved the bladder which was inflated and the children played with it like it was a beach ball. I remember that my siblings and cousins and I had lots of fun playing with the inflated bladders.

My wife's family took hog killing even more seriously than my family did. The year she and I were married I went out with the men folk to the hog lot to kill the first of several hogs to be butchered. Her uncle handed me the 22 rifle to make the kill. This was something I had never done before as my dad always did that. I really wanted to impress my inlaws so I took the gun and made ready to shoot the hog. Having heard that the proper way was to envision an X running diagionally from eye to ear and eye to ear and shoot the X dead center, I took aim, pulled the trigger and that hog hit the ground without making a sound - dead as four o'clock! That successful shot went a long way in gaining me acceptance into the family! --Paul Patton

Tech-Link: Chromebooks surpass iPads in Schools

(c) ColumbiaMagazine.com

There's an interesting article in Forbes about a big change in classroom devices: Chromebooks vs. iPads. Google Unseats Apple In U.S. Classrooms As Chromebooks Beat iPads

The article sites pricepoints, and says that, while all of the devices inspire a bit of frivolity in the classrooom, the mix of serious apps and gaming and video ones at Google dampens misuse o the Chromebooks.

A tech note: The dream of using an iPad for comprehensive work hasn't made sense for CM tech researchers. Can't rely solely on a Chromebook yet, there are some awkward situations for journalists, but Chromebooks have come a long way since Google introduced them. At least one article on Sunday with CM, 30 Nov 2014, was posted entirely using a borrowed Chromebook. It was done on an HP with a 13" screen, purchased in the last month for less than $300. T

Messiah Moment: Premiere in Dublin was a remarkable success

The community Messiah-sing with Lindsey Wilson College Choral Ensembles and the Louisville Orchestra and YOU! is Tuesday evening, December 2, 2014, at 7pmCT/8pmET, at Columbia Baptist Church, 201 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY.

From Gerald Chaffin
News from Lindsey Wilson Choral Ensembles

The 1742 Messiah premiere in Dublin was a remarkable success. Reviews stated "universal Satisfaction to all." Even the Bishop Dr. Edward Synge wrote, "The whole is beyond any thing I had a notion of . . . It Seems to be a Species of Musick different from any other." He also added the observations: "the young of both Sexes were present in great numbers, their behaviour was uniformly grave & decent, which Show'd that they were not only pleas'd but affected with the performance. Many, I hope, were instructed by it, and had Sentiments inspir'd in a Stronger Manner on their Minds." In the spring of 1743 Handel brought Messiah to London with less than desirable results. Even before the performance, it was criticized "for desecrating the sacred story by being performed in a secular venue" - at the Playhouse! Local papers carried heated debate regarding the appropriateness of the location, resulting in some creative verse from the London Daily Advertiser:
Cease, Zealots, cease to blame these Heav'nly Lays,
For Seraphs fit to sing Messiah's Praise!
Nor, for your trivial Argument, assign,
"The Theatre not fit for Praise Divine."
In another issue we read that it cannot be "defended as Decent, to use the same Place one Week as a Temple to perform a sacred Oratorio in, and the next as a Stage, to exhibit the Bufooneries of Harlequin." Messiah made a significant recovery in London, but it took years, only after Handel returned the work to its original intent - the 1749 benefit for the Foundling Hospital "for the Maintenance and Education of Exposed and Deserted young Children." - Gerald Chafin

JIM: Professor Huffaker on the importance of education

One hundred years ago, as now, the emphasis was on attaining higher levels of education. Prof. Tobias Huffaker was Superintendent of Adair County Schools. Barksdale Hamlett was State Superintendent of Education (Hamlett was one-time owner of the Adair County News and the father of long-time News editor Edward C. Hamlett.). In 1914, the goal for progress was a six old increase in the number of High School students in Adair County.

By JIM

The December 5, 1914 edition of the News, carried a lengthy open letter to the public school teachers from Adair County School Superintendent Tobias Huffaker. In the closing paragraph, Prof. Huffaker expressed his views about the importance of education:
"There is a great need for more boys and girls to stay in school till they complete the eighth grade of the common school course. Then there is an urgent need for more boys and girls in the County High School [better known as the upper grades of the Columbia Graded and High School]. There ought to be at least six times as many pupils in the County High School as there are. [An anecdotal report earlier in the school year reported 37 pupils in the High School.] Let the people awake to the importance of keeping their children in school till they secure an education that will, in a measure, fit them for the duties of life. We must have more children in regular attendance at school."
The same letter outlined the procedure, as outlined by Barksdale Hamlett, Sr., the state Superintendent of Education, for determining which students in the county common schools would be eligible for free tuition at the High School:

The county Superintendent was to draw up "a set of questions covering the Common School course of study, and to mail to each teacher a copy of this set." The teachers were then to keep the questions sealed until the specified dates (December 16 & 17 in Adair County), when the teachers would "give a written examination to those pupils only that have completed the seventh and eighth grades of school work."

The teachers were strict orders to score the exams and forward them the Superintendent, along with written recommendations to the Superintendent for "only such students as [the teacher] deems competent to pass on the basis of the pupil's answers..." Students who received a recommendation and who scored the required averages on the exam would "be awarded promotion cards showing that they have completed the common school course...In order to pass a pupil must make a general average of not less than 75 per cent, and must not fall below 60 percent on any one branch."
