Ernest Calvin Bennett, 70, Russell County, KY (1944-2014) He was a native of Columbia, KY, and a resident of Russell Springs, KY, at the time of his death. He was the son of the late Nora Catherine (Wheeler) and Dallas Ray Bennett. He was a member of a very large, highly respected family, with deep roots in Adair County, Russell County, Taylor County, and other areas of South Central Kentucky. His wife, Brenda Taylor Bennett, survives. He leaves 37 direct living descendants. Eleven siblings, residents of Adair, Russell, Taylor, Hart Counties, KY; and Morgan County, Indiana, survive. He worked as a Concrete Truck Driver and was a member of Coffey Grove Separate Baptist Church. Ernest Calvin Bennett, 70, of Russell Springs, KY, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014, at his residence. Funeral Services at Wilson Funeral Home, Russell Springs, KY, at 1pmCT on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, with Bro. Steve Willis officiating. Interment will be in the Tarter Cemetery in Adair County, KY. Visitation will be after 5pmCT on Monday at Wilson Funeral Home in Russell Springs. A process that we carnivores probably would have had to participate in, or at the very least witnessed. The socializing that went on during the event. As well as the hardy meal that accompanied it would surely make a person in today's hectic world quite envious of that simpler time. I found myself witnessing this very same process just a few years back, purely by chance. Souse sandwiches at Reece's Market topped off bird hunts Comments about: Billy Joe Fudge: Old time hog-killings ended with souse making Geniece Marcum remembers that the highlight of bird hunting for her late husband Earl Reid Marcum, and brothers-in-law Russell Hughes and Brent Anderson was to stop by after the hunt at Reece's Market on S Main in Edmonton for souse sandwiches. She doesn't remember if it was homemade - made in Metcalfe County - or not. If not, it was probably Fischers. A Kentucky company which turns out superb souse. She remembers that Earl Reed liked to eat souse on white bread. And he like hot sauce, the hotter the better. His drink of choice was orange or grape soda. To replace him, the school trustees hired Prof. W.M. Wilson, who had served in the same position immediately before Prof. Turner's tenure. During his previous stay in Columbia, Prof. Wilson had married one of the belles of the town, Miss Martha Hancock, a daughter of Judge & Mrs. Junius Hancock. Likely, her ties to the town lured the couple back to Columbia after a hiatus in Monticello, where Prof. Wilson had served in a like capacity for the previous two years. The price was right and Quarter Horse/Thoroughbred crosses are popular for the hunter/jumper circuits. So we figured if we couldn't ride her she'd be a good broodmare prospect. It set off the Great Depression that severely disrupted the lives of most every one in the United States. It hit people where it hurt -- in their pocketbooks! Following the stock market crash, there was widespread closing of banks. People lost all their savings in those banks. The Blue Springs (Nebraska) State Bank where my parents (Arley and Merle Hinman) banked stayed solvent through the depression. The bank was run by Floyd Patton and Arthur Krauss, long-time friends and classmates of my parents. Other banks in Gage County, Nebraska, were not so fortunate. He worked as a carpenter and enjoyed spending time fishing. His wife, Mary Chatherine Davis Williams, survives. He leaves 38 direct living descendants.
