By Charles Balcom
News from Lindsey Wilson College

COLUMBIA, KY - Five members of the Lindsey Wilson women's soccer program earned NAIA Scholar-Athelte honors, the national office announced on Friday, 28 Nov 2014. Gloria Hensley, Emilia Jonsson, Megan Rauch, Elizabet Madjarac and Katarina Simic all received the honor.

Simic earns the honor for the second-straight season. All five Blue Raiders earned Academic All Mid-South Conference honors earlier this season. The five Blue Raiders honored ties for the most in program history, matching the five honorees Lindsey Wilson achieved during the 1998 season.

In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor. The Blue Raiders accounted for five of the 578 student-athletes to receive the honor.

Reminiscing: Thanksgiving and Hog Killing

Up until the 30s, 40s, and 50s, it was an annual thing to kill hogs on Thanksgiving days in the Green River Country of Adair County. It took days of planning, and the morning started with getting the scalding box ready, and the boiling water just right - the temperature was measured by the number of times one's finger could be swiped through the water. The work started at 4am, but sometimes, the actual shooting of hog had to await the daylight so the men could see he sights on their rifles. There was scraping, then hanging the hog on the gambling poles, then butchering and sausage making. The tenderloin was given to the women who prepared lunch for the men and workers ate in shifts. There was lard making, with its side of cracklings, wonderful wonderful for crackling bed. George Rice remembers the process in great detail, and wonders if those were the good old days. even with the rabbit hunting which followed the Thanksgiving meat making ritual. He wonders, after enjoying a far different breakfast on Thanksgiving Day, 2014, and concludes that they were. They were the Good Old Days.

As I sat at the breakfast table this morning eating my bowl of oats I began to reminisce the so called good old days of hog killings.

At our house, it was an annual thing to kill hogs on Thanksgiving Day.

KY Afield: Give the gift of the outdoors this holiday season

By Kevin Kelly

Catalogs, emails and commercials touting must-have gifts this holiday season fill our mailboxes, flood our inboxes and splash across our television screens as the biggest shopping weekend of the year approaches.

Amid the avalanche of gift ideas, there are some guaranteed to please the outdoors enthusiast on your list. Consider a gift certificate from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Available online at fw.ky.gov, it functions much like a gift card. Recipients have five years from the date of purchase to redeem it online for licenses and permits, Kentucky Afield magazine subscriptions, Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area passes or summer camp registration fees.

By Ed Waggener

In 1952 the late Pleas Grimsley opened a tiny boutique jewelry store and repair service in the Adair Hotel, with three access points; 1) Through the Hotel Barber Shop, or 2) Through the main hotel lobby, or 3) Entering the hallway from the Greensburg Side, taking a right at the hallway 'T' and entering the main door of the room Charles Grimsley recalls as having been "about 10 x 10."

Little did anyone dream, at the time, that little store would grow into what it is today. This morning, at 9amCT, Mr. Grimsley son, Charles, and daughter-in-law, Holly Grimsley, are having the Grand Opening of the company's second store, on the Public Square in Glasgow, KY,which is a virtual clone of couple's successful Downtown Business at 102 Public Square, Columbia, KY.
