Russell Creek from the bridge at the City Limit on Russell Road. This is one put-in place occasionally mentioned for a Trail Town USA paddle trail. It's also a great fishing and turtling area. Large strings of big catfish are taken here, as well as big strings of bream. If he hole in the bow has a name, we're unaware of it. Would like to know. - CM Photo taken late November 2014.

JIM: Thanksgiving in Adair County, 1914

Thanksgiving day news was sparse in the News, concern about the war in Europe was uppermind, but business houses did close at noon on Thanksgiving for sermon. Then, as now, sports were a priority, with the report of a run-and-gun up at Columbia High School, where a team from Monticello defeated Our Boys by 7 points. And there were no complaints about unfair officiating. The referee was from Monticello, the umpire of this place. And the News could admit of no criticism

A century ago, Thanksgiving Day came on the heels of a bitter cold snap and passed off quietly in Adair County, with neither parade nor Big Box Store shopping madness to disturb the general tranquility. No doubt, many farmers and their families expressed gratitude for a good crop year, and certainly, many a mother and young wife breathed an extra prayer of relief that the war in Europe had not (yet) cast a shadow across the Atlantic to touch her son or husband.

Billy Joe Fudge: Jury still out on mass harvest of chestnuts

Maybe not harvesting trees when chestnut blight hit our shores would not have saved his most magnificent tree. Today, a similar plight threatens Ash, as Emeald Ash Borer makes its way south from Michigan
Comments re article 71512 Wonders how many Chestnuts might have survived if left alone from Brad Byington

By Billy Joe Fudge

Actually Brad, it went further than that in that the reality was that folks actually harvested healthy trees which were of large enough girth to be economically feasible for harvesting. Landowners were seeking to limit their losses when this devastating disease was brought to our shores around 1906.

Bill Troutwine: My Most Memorable Thanksgiving Dinner

Bill Troutwine can't forget the Thanksgiving Dinner in 1995. Not a feast. But then, for most of us, it isn't the grandest meal we ever had which is most memorable or most appreciated. This one, so simple, is sandwiched within one of Bill Troutwines most unforgettable days; it's a story his closest critics, his family call one of his best

It was Thanksgiving morning. The year was 1995. Donna, my wife and I were living in Big Sky, Montana where I worked as a resident Deputy Sheriff. My patrol area was a 100 mile long and 10 to 15 mile wide stretch of area called the Gallatin Canyon. This area begins at the community of Gallatin Gateway and ends 15 or so miles past West Yellowstone at the Idaho border.

The day before I had worked my regular shift, starting at 4:00pm and ending at 2:00am. Donna and I were planning on a noontime Thanksgiving dinner before I would go to work at 4:00pm. But in emergency work, plans can change at a moments notice, and ours were about to.

Wonders how many Chestnuts might have survived if left alone

Writer says eradication program hastened near extinction

Brad Byington writes:
The last part of this article states that the Chestnuts were nearly wiped out by fungus. That is not entirely the case. Once the fungus was discovered, it was then decided to cut down every Chestnut tree that showed signs of anything. Who knows how many of those trees would have survived if left alone? - Brad Byington

Chuck Hinman: IJM. A Memorable Hinman Thanksgiving

A Memorable Hinman Thanksgiving. This is Chuck Hinman's classic account of Thanksgiving 1933 in which he describes shucking corn, trading eggs for groceries, the special treat of raisins and celery, the stranger sharing the feast, and seeing a Marx brothers movie.

A Memorable Hinman Thanksgiving

When Thanksgiving rolled around in 1933, I was a eleven-year old boy, growing up on a Nebraska farm. The famed stock-market crash of 1929 had not much immediate effect on our life. My dad had a few gold certificates which become worthless but no big deal. What did 'do him in' and other farmers, was the combination of the stock market crash or depression and a succession of years of various weather and insect plagues. All Hell seemed to have broken loose and there was no relief in between disasters. It was heartbreaking and scary times, nothing before like it!
