Joyce Coomer: Thankful for 7 Favorite Foods

Thanksgiving. She's thankful for favorite foods and the restaurants who serve them

By Joyce Coomer

Thanksgiving celebrations sometimes get tied more to the different foods served than actually giving thanks for our blessings. Since food is so often equaled with Thanksgiving Day, I'm sending a list of a few of my favorite foods around town and who serves them . . .

  1. Cornbread from Moore's Pool & Lunch
  2. Blueberry muffins from The Harvest Cafe
  3. Bacon from Five Star on Jamestown Street
  4. Maple glazed donuts from Best Donuts
  5. Blueberry pomegranate smoothies from McDonald's
  6. Rice noodles from Tray's Garden
  7. Lima beans from Betty's OK Country Cooking
I eat occasionally at nearly every restaurant in town, so have other foods that I enjoy but can't remember them all at the moment . . .

Thanks to all the restaurants for being open and serving foods I like!

- Joyce M. Coomer

Thanks Joyce Coomer - Appreciate the list, and the attention to the people we count on every day for our food. - CM

Several descendants of Adair Chestnut tree at Lincoln birthplace

Chris Bennett writes:
There are several American chestnut trees planted on the grounds of Abraham Lincoln's birthplace National Park. These trees are descendants of the Adair county tree that survived the blight. They actually have a historical marker telling about the tree and it's re-introduction. Hopefully someday science will find a workaround and the American chestnut will return to the forests of Kentucky. - Chris Bennett

Billy Joe Fudge: Root systems of 1,000s of chestnuts surviving

Forester says that the one authenticated and scrutinized by chestnut experts is infected with the blight but has not been killed by it.
Comments re article 71483 American Chestnut descendant marked at Lindsey Wilson

By Billy Joe Fudge

Just a couple of comments concerning this article.

There are many American Chestnut trees growing in Adair County. The blight cannot live in the soil therefore the root systems of thousands of trees are still surviving in Adair County's more than 125,000 acre, naturally regenerated forest.
