I have been sitting here in front of my computer for days - ordering seeds for next year's garden - it's hard to make decisions when I'm tempted by so many delicious looking vegetables.

Stephen Bishop at Mammoth Cave

Roger Brucker came into the Bookstore on a Sunday afternoon some time back. He told me that he was writing a novel about Stephen Bishop, the slave who was a guide at Mammoth Cave during the first half of the nineteenth century.

He read a chapter or so to me, and I was hooked -- wanting more.

Chuck Hinman: IJMA. Veterans Day 2003

Chuck says, "I wasn't looking for it, and I'm not sure I was deserving of it, but it sure was nice to be publicly thanked for military service."
Next earlier Chuck Hinman column - Shopping gone wrong

By Chuck Hinman

I am a Veteran of WW 2. My service was not unusual. My life took a detour for 41 months in September 1942 but that's all it was, a detour. My service time was in the US Army Air Forces, the 20th Air Force, with overseas service on Guam. I never once entertained any idea that my life was being 'put-up-on' by our government's decision to go to war against Japan. To protest, even mildly, never crossed my mind. I was not dumb.

In a moment of insanity I agreed to open my home for the annual Edmonton Metcalfe County Chamber Christmas Home Tour. "Have you lost your mind?" Guy asked, as did my friends. I concluded that I had, but once I made the commitment I was not going to back out. I have one month to shape up my house and decorate. "Can you do it? Yes you can." Bob the Builder came to mind.

Shop Small aids local merchants - on Sat 29 Nov 2014

First weekend after Thanksgiving. Many CM 7 County area businesses are participating with special sales, door prizes, and more. It's a grassroots movement aimed at driving shoppers to local merchants, especially those in distinctive downtowns, whether they are part of the Main Street program or not.

By Diane Comer
From State of Kentucky news services

FRANKFORT, KY - First there was Black Friday, then Cyber Monday. In 2010, the first Small Business Saturday took place the first weekend after Thanksgiving - and today it has grown into a national movement in support of small businesses and the shop small movement, a grassroots effort to drive shoppers to local merchants. This year, Small Business Saturday will be November 29, the highlight of many holiday events and activities planned and already underway in Kentucky Main Street Program (KYMS) communities and other communities. KYMS was created in 1979 to help reverse the economic decline that had taken place in many small communities as retailers and housing began to move away from downtown.

"Small Business Saturday fits perfectly with the goals of Kentucky Main Street because our focus is local, independent, small business owners," said Kitty Dougoud, KYMS state coordinator. "Supporting friends, neighbors and local artisans keeps dollars in the community and creates a thriving downtown."

Kentucky is fortunate to have many communities that have distinctive downtowns with large stocks of historic buildings uniquely suited for the restaurants, boutiques and businesses found there. These locally owned enterprises often feature Kentucky Crafted or Kentucky Proud products, specialize in Kentucky-made artwork and jewelry, or feature books on Kentucky history, architecture and cultural traditions.

Tuesday morning one of the first things I did was vote.

For me going anywhere is always a challenge. First I have to get out of the house without all of the dogs racing out to the truck. Then I have to get out of the gate without a bum rush of dogs. When I bought the truck I made the rule that no dogs would ride in it – well only Kelsey and Thumbelina.
