Excerpt from my yet to be written Novel. 'Haunted Hills'

By Shamarie Claiborne

Luna found the old tree she was hiding against was sufficient enough to catch her breath. She had ended up right beside what was left of an old road, in the heart of what folks in these parts called Hurt Hollers. She had to slow herself and her mind down. Slow deep breaths, she told herself, slow deep breaths. As her breathing slowed, her thoughts become clearer and suddenly she knew she had to make some decisions. As her mind had cleared, she finally smelled the rain in the air and the realization that her body could not take another night unprotected made her already empty stomach, even sicker. Even with the unusually warm weather of late, she knew tonight would be a completely different story.

Sharon Whitehurst wants to know what local phrase means

It's a question for the likes of Billy Joe Fudge, author of the Great Wooded South Lexicon; comments welcome from all however to help end he confusement

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
Many of us delight in the process of choosing a word or phrase to express our appreciation of natural beauty, wildlife or weather--I've heard us described as 'word-smiths.'

The rich heritage of the English language offers us a vast range of descriptive adjectives and adverbs to cover every nuance of perception.

I tend to pounce on a new word and either reject it or tuck it away in my personal lexicon.

I have to add that nearly 5 years in Kentucky have introduced me to local figures of speech which may at first be confusing. The one that still trips me is 'I wouldn't care to do that.' To make sure I understand I usually ask, 'Do you mean you don't mind doing that--or would you rather not?' --Sharon Whitehurst

Poetry by Robert Stone: This one who - a sonnet for a birthday

This one who
- a sonnet for the birthday of Terri Powell Haight
Content to be alone, large crowd unnerves
this one who, keeping going unaware
with concentration so intense none swerves,
ignores the garden wandering black bear.

Quite introverted, smaller groups more suit
this one who, fearing what might come between
the outer show and inner attribute,
desires the body language to be seen.

Though private, love of touching holds in sway
this one who, needing fingers backward tugged
to keep from fragile art and friend each day,
rejoices when the other would be hugged.

Revealed reluctantly, all senses seize
this one who with life's goodness is at ease.
- Robert Stone, 29 October 2014
