Agrees with IJFAS, Ralph Waggener on letting children work

Work was no work because, writer says, she loved every minute of it

Marcia Shuffett writes:
I have a comment on something I read in "It's Just For A Smile". It is about young children put to work on the farm. I am old-school and even though I was raised in the city, both of my parents were raised in small rural towns. I remember my early years visiting in the summer at my grandparents and I always had the time of my life. Even when we were little our grandmother let go hunt the eggs and feed the chickens, pluck feathers, and churn butter, etc. That "work" was no work to me because I loved every minute of it. As a matter of fact, I think our young people would be a lot healthier and happier if they spent most of their time outdoors when the weather is pretty and that does not mean taking an IPod along. - Marcia Shuffett

Transportation Cabinet, KSP combat copper wire theft on highways

Literally highway robbery of Kentucky drivers

By: Chuck Wolfe

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 27, 2014) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and Kentucky State Police (KSP) are joining forces and offering a reward to attack a crime that is costing Kentucky taxpayers millions of dollars - theft of copper wire from highway lighting systems.

"The crime of copper wire theft from lights that illuminate our roadways is literally highway robbery of Kentucky drivers," KSP Major Mike Crawford said at a news conference today. "This type of theft results in damage that far exceeds the salvage value of the wire."

Nancy Albright, Deputy State Highway Engineer in charge of operations and maintenance, said KYTC engineers estimate that the thieves have caused at least $2 million in damages in the last four years. In 2014 alone, thieves have pillaged entrance and exit ramp lights on our interstate highways at least 37 times.

Letter: On Photographing Trees

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Guy, you are suffering from the same, yet unnamed, syndrome with which all other folks who attempt to capture the majestic beauty of trees through photography are afflicted.

Trees, above all other plants or animals, seem to be unique in their beauty and majesty. I've given it much thought and not being a photographer by training or education, I have trouble defining the conundrum.

However it appears to me that the beauty of "a tree" is a complex mixture of its surroundings with which it blends in a rare ability to dominate its particular space and mini-ecosystem without being domineering.

Additionally, a tree is not just a painting that can be viewed in its entirety as a painting from afar but must be consumed and digested, if you will, in its majesty of individual brush strokes, its supporting infrastructure, its height, its breath, its depth, its intricacies of minutia and yet at the same time its overall nature of existence as formed in the recesses of the beholders mind, heart and being.

My summation is; "it is hard to photograph a tree because trees cannot be adequately photographed". --BJF
