Recognizing our Vietnam War Veterans on the 50th Anniversary

It is essential we continue to honor those who served our country in Vietnam between 1955 and 1975. As of 2010, nearly 1,700 Americans are still listed as missing in action in Vietnam, and we never forget the sacrifice they and their families made for our nation. Honoring the actions of our Vietnam War veterans, both living and deceased, is long overdue. John Bam Carney

By John Bam Carney (KY 51, Taylor & Adair Counties, KY)

FRANKFORT, KY (September 18, 2014) - Later this week people from across the Commonwealth will gather in Frankfort for ceremonies at the Vietnam War Memorial to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the war fought against Communism in southeast Asia. Ann says meeting Today, 18 Sep 14 to tackle road money issues

There are still more questions than answers about the bizarre 'Press Conference' roads fund episode. Fully half of projects - 3 of 6 - proposed by the "Press Conference" group failed to meet minimum need guidelines set by Rural Highway Department, itself. Now with winter approaching, there's a scramble to come up with a new set of roads, and a meeting is scheduled in Judge Melton's office to try straighten out a mess. Why the Kentucky Rural Highway Department politicized road money due Adair County remains unclear, but it is becoming more and more clear that the process ill served the otherwise squeaky clean administration of Gov. Steve Beshear. For Adair County, the diversion could mean a season's delay for some badly needed road work. - EW

By Ed Waggener

Adair County Judge Ann Melton said Wednesday evening that she has scheduled a meeting in the her office with two members of Adair Fiscal Court, Magistrate Sammy Baker District 3, and Magistrate Joe Rogers (6); and Rep. Bam Carney (KY 51, Taylor and Adair Counties), of Campbellsville, KY, to try to put together a list of qualifying roads after three of the six roads Rep. Carney and his group hobbled together did not meet needs assessment guidelines.

That assessment, a prequesite for a Memorandum of understanding, did not come until after Rep. Carney presented his plan to Adair County Fiscal Court.

These roads recommended by Bam Carney and his group simply don't qualify for repairs under the Kentucky Highway Department's own guidelines. Roads must have at least a "6" on scale of "10" to qualify.
  • Rated 3- Joe Tom Grant Road (CR 1195) from .0647 miles west of KY 900 extending southwesterly for approximately 0.32 miles. (CM note: In District 3, Sammy Baker's district)
  • Rated 3 - Taylor Ford Road (CR 1001) from JR Burton Road extending northwesterly ot KY 206 for approximately 2.03 Miles. (CM note: In District 7, Billy Rowe's district)
  • Rated 3 - Roy Road (CR 1163) from KY 80 extending southerly for approximately 0.14 miles. (CM Note: In Magistrate Daryl Flatt's District)
The following Press Conference Group Roads qualify, are in need of repairs, get a "6" or greater rating on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being for roads in the worst shape.

  • RATED "9" - Bennett Ridge Road West (CR1328) from KY 768 extending southwesterly for approximately 1.0 mile. (CM note: In District 5, Billy Dean Coffey's district) This road was also on a list of roads submitted by Judge Melton.
  • RATED "9" - Piercy Road (CR 1472) from KY 551 for approximately 0.55 miles (CM note: In District 6, Joe Roger's district)
  • RATED "8" - Marlo Campbell Road (Cr 1018) from Allen Schoolhouse Road extending northerly to the end of the county maintenance for approximately 0.91 mile (CM note: In District 1, Harold Burton's district)
