Vonnie Kolbenschlag - Dr. Arnold made wise suggestion: Merger

ON THE PAYROLL TAX
Vonnie Kolbenschlag feels the tax is unfair. Also recommends reducing City Council from six at large members to three from districts

By Vonnie Kolbenschlag
Personal commentary

There have been very interesting comments regarding the payroll tax and I am very happy to see so many persons giving views - thanks to CM's easy access as well as people being involved. I do feel the tax is unfair. I do not understand how it will benefit grandchildren as a reason given by a council member. Can that be clarified, please.

KYTC to remove signs illegally placed on state right of way

Signs pose potential hazards for drivers, mowing crews

By Amber Hale, Public Information Officer
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 8, Somerset, KY

Somerset, KY (September 15, 2014) - Campaign signs and other signs placed on state right of way that restrict sight distance or interfere with mowing operations will be removed by Kentucky Transportation (KYTC) crews in the coming weeks.

Signs encroaching on state right of way pose a potential hazard to motorists and also impede mowing crews and other maintenance operations.

Kentucky law and KYTC policy prohibit placement of any signs - for political candidates, yard sale or any other type of advertising - on state right of way. The prohibition includes, signs attached to utility poles or fences on the right of way.

Signs will be moved to the state highway garage in each county of KYTC District 8 and kept for two weeks. Unclaimed signs will be discarded.

Gas Price Drumbeat: Urges Columbians call AG Consumer Protection daily

Columbians paying $8 more every tankful than Bowling Green residents, writer says

By Billy Joe Fudge
Personal commentary

Last weekend in Bowling Green gasoline was $3.09 per gallon and $3.49 in Columbia. On a 20 gallon fill up, that is $8.00 out of our local citizen's bank accounts compared to those citizens of Bowling Green/Warren County. 40 fill-ups per year for an average driver in Columbia would mean that $320.00 per year would be taken from each driver.

We in Columbia/Adair County are really concerned about this new tax which our local, elected officials are levying upon us but seem to be laying down and taking this exorbitant skimming of profits from our pockets like cattle being headed to slaughter.

Join me in calling the Kentucky Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division number, 502-696-5389 each and every day until this () is stopped! --

KY Color: The case of Grey Squirrel dining on Loblolly Pine Cones

Click on headline for essay with photo(s)

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

There is a Squirrel of the Grey variety dining high up in my Loblolly Pine Trees. We've been living here since the early nineties and other than a passerby grabbing a quick snack on his way to what would be considered more "top shelf" menu items such as Hickory Nuts, Black Gum Berries, and a whole plethora of Acorns, this is the only Grey Squirrel who seems to have a preference for our Pine Cones.

Steve Warren: Proposed payroll tax not best approach

' . . . I want to see economic development in our area. I want to see our area grow. I want to see the people of our county and city given the opportunities to increase their quality of life and earn better wages. I want to see our community beautified and people taking a growing pride in living here. I do not believe that this payroll (occupational license) tax is the means to accomplish this.' - STEVE WARREN

By Steve Warren
Personal commentary

I appreciate what was said in the article that Ben Arnold posted last week concerning his views for economical development. I believe that a majority of the people in our area want to see opportunity expand in our county and city. I do not believe that the present approach is the best approach.
