Chris Morrison writes:
We have a nice justice center. But nothing compares to our beautiful court house. Any picture that has been taking of the court house just seems to amaze me just beautiful. Never ever seen a court house that was prettier than ours in Columbia, KY. - Chris Morrison

Kentucky Afield Outdoors: New teal-only season

A teal-only season that is new for 2014 runs from Sept. 22 through Sept. 25. A combined wood duck and teal season opens Sept. 17 and closes Sept. 21.

Sept. 11, 2014
by: Lee McClellan

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Kentucky waterfowl hunters now have additional days in September to pursue teal. Hunters may harvest up to six teal a day during the experimental teal-only season.

"Over the last several years, Kentucky, Tennessee and Florida have been working to obtain additional teal-only days at the end of their early wood duck seasons," said Rocky Pritchert, migratory bird coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "In late June, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved the request and allowed four additional days to be added to the end of the current wood duck and teal seasons."

Happy Tail - Doggy Road Trip

By Peg Schaeffer

On Friday I drove to Nashville, TN to take two dogs to meet a transport which was taking them up North. Brutus, a German Shepherd, was going to CT to his new home and Remington, an English Setter, was going to NY to meet his new owners.

Remington has been with us for over a year. His owner had moved to Columbia and due to personal problems and long working hours felt he had no choice but to euthanize his dog that he had raised from a pup. Lucky for him he took Remington to Dr. King and Emily, the receptionist, gave him our rescue number. So instead he brought Remi to us.

All Around Adair County, mid-September, 1914

News from downtown Columbia was "skase, mighty skase" a century ago this mid-September, 2014, but a cornucopia of newsletters filled the interior pages of the News. - JIM

By JIM

In Columbia, the biggest news was that the Messrs. Willis and Murrell had about completed the courthouse auditorium renovations. While the News applauded the effort, it also cited other improvements more pressing, specifically, that the roof (likely the original) was in dire need of replacement, noting that during a recent heavy rain, "water came through to the floor, in barrels." It was also suggested that "the old plastering should be knocked off and replaced with metal ceiling." Ever mindful of a dollar, the paper noted, "The court-house cost this county about $33,000 and it should be protected."

The Lighted Torch of the 'Secesh' or Civil War Days in Reality

Four years ago I shared this letter which Chip Palmore found concerning an event in Hart County during the War Between the States. I hesitate to call it the Civil War -- human slaughter seems most un-civil to me.

Mastin Dashiel enlisted in the Union army in September 1861 at the tender age of 45. A resident of Johnson County, Indiana, he joined "Captain Graham's Company, Indiana Mounted Volunteers" which later became Company G 34d Indiana Cavalry. He furnished his own horse.

My Legacy : The Sentimental Journey Tapes

As I live out my life waiting for my heavenly townhouse to be completed, I occasionally reflect on what one thing I will most be remembered for when I'm out of here. Certainly I have lived in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, long enough to have left some tracks. The question is -- what tracks will I most be remembered for?

Carol Perkins: A husband, Ted, ends up in doghouse

A dutiful husband's thoughtful effort to pick up the family dog at the groomers - but taking the wrong dog results in threats of police action, and a scolding from his wife, even though their children didn't notice the wrong dog difference either. Sadly, the wife would also remind him (her dutiful, loving husband) that any man should know his own dog just as he would know his own children.
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: The Final Tour (of old Metcalfe Co. HS) Posted September 7, 2014

By Carol Perkins

When Ted’s wife asked him to pick Sam up from the dog groomer on his way home from work, he agreed but grumbled when he hung up the phone. After working all day, lifting and hauling carpet at his store, the last thing he wanted was to stop anywhere, but she had taken the dog that morning on her way to work, so the least he could do was pick him up.

Tommy Melson says there is a network bias against Melson Ridge

Writer's concern is posted. No geographical bias is ever intended. CM posts many stories about all areas, including wonderful, colorul Melson Ridge, where the vast majority of the stories are about the churches, the beauty of the area, deaths, births, marriages, and triumphs and tragedies, just as we But readers can be the judge by scanning the CM stories found from links on Google.com. No slight to any region is ever intended, particularly one of my favorite spots on earth.
Click on headline for Mr. Melson's full letter, with its very admirable community pride. And, of course he's right that, as vast an area as Melson Ridge encompasses, the law enforcement news release was a bit extravagant including Bakerton in the Greater Melson Ridge area. Simpson Ridge and Inroad - maybe. But Bakerton is clean off in Cumberland County; Melson Ridge can only claim part of that County, a little more territory than it claims in Russell, we'd guess. Thanks, too, to Tommy Melson, for identifying CM as a 'Network.' for the first time. We like that, and the more we think about it, it's accurate. - EW

Mr.Waggener, I just checked the list for graduates for the 1986 Adair County high school class and I was left off the list. (See 1986, now, please, Mr. Melson.)
