Farmers Market on the Square Tuesday evening, Sept. 9, 2014

2014-09-09 - FM2/Adair Annex parking lot, 424 Public Square - Photo by Ed Waggener. Even before the official 4:30pmCT Opening of the Farmers Market on the Square, early shoppers were checking the apples at Jeff Scott's place of business. He's closed to the camera in the yellow shirt, and at Debbie Burris' stand; she's on the left in back. On the left, Donna Jones, President of the Adair County Garden Club, was on the way to her stand set up nearest the historic courthouse. There's an especially good selection today, and the weather couldn't have been better at the onset. The hospitality tent hasn't been set up, but the new benches in front of the annex make a nice place to have an impromptu picnic. - CM

A Jeff Scott story: Bargains too good to pass up

This story was told Jeff Scott at his apple stand at FM2TE today. He said that years ago, an Adair Countian traveling to Chicago told his hosts he was hungry for a hamburger. When he approached the cook in a little lunch stand, he asked how much a hamburger would be and was told, "They're 25 cents." The counterman added. "But I can let you have a dozen for $3." The Adair County man quickly saw an advantage. "Well, in that case," he said, "Just go ahead and give me a dozen."

This is a good story, but not Scott's best. He has plenty of others.

KY 206 & KY 55 Intersection project in Adair Co. moving forward

Right-of-way process to be determining factor for construction start date
By Amber Hale, Public Information Officer
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 8, Somerset, KY

SOMERSET, KY (Sept. 9, 2014) – Construction to improve the highly-traveled KY 206 and KY 55 intersection in Adair County will soon get underway.

Funding for the project was authorized July 21, 2014, with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 office anticipating construction beginning this fall. However, KYTC has since encountered right-of-way issues that have delayed the construction schedule. Although unable to locate some unknown heirs to adjoining properties, KYTC has obtained authorization to begin the right-of-way acquisition process.

At this point the Cabinet has not identified any other obstacles to prevent project construction from beginning. Once the right-of-way process is complete, construction should begin thereafter. The starting date for construction has not been set. The right-of-way process will be the determining factor for construction start date. - Amber Hale

JIM: Around Adair Co. (and a little beyond): early Sept., 1914

The September 9, 1914 edition of the News carried no fewer than seven newsletters from Adair County communities as well as one from Esto in Russell County.

By: Jim

Sparksville
The correspondent from Sparksville wrote that Olie Breeding had a very sick child; Luskin Gadberry had sold two hogs for $11.00; and all the merchants were having a fine run of trade. Flour was 65c per sack; meal, $1.25/bushel; chickens, 12c/lb, hens 10c/lb, and eggs, 16c/dz. (In today's money, that's $2.75/lb for chickens and $3.67/dz for eggs.)
