Please join the vigil if you can; but pray, wherever you are There will be a community wide prayer vigil at the Columbia-Adair County Fire Station 200 Merchant Street, Columbia, KY, tonight, Thursday, August 21, at 7pmCT for the injured Campbellsville firefighters. Overflow parking in Adair Judicial Center. - Donald Hare By Linda Waggener Please stop whatever you are doing and pray for firefighter Anthony "Tony" Grider this evening - pray until we hear that his critical injuries are improving at U of L hospital. Tony, whose injuries are now known to have been the worst received in today's accident in Campbellsville, was one of the most enthusiastic and dedicated young councilmen I've been honored to serve with. That's how I came to know his caring nature. His EMS and firefighter families in Adair and Taylor Counties have served with him and watched him in action over a 16-year career. My heart dropped when Mayor Tony Young's voice broke after the press conference as he talked about how badly Tony was injured when thousands of volts of electricity hit his body. Details of what happened to cause the accident are being revealed and the investigation will continue, but what we know for now is that Tony needs us lifting up his name, calling for his healing. Comment: No one should get panties in wad over concrete pillar Commentary: She recommends a wire bristle brush, if anything. Comments about Comments re photo 56351 What should be done with concrete pillars Click on headline for complete comment By Joyce Coomer I don't know why so many people are getting their panties in a wad over the pillars on the square. They don't impede traffic flow - vehicular or pedestrian - and make nice resting places if you so desire. If the remnants of yellow paint were removed the pillars wouldn't be quite as noticeable, but I don't advocate repainting them -- it detracts from their architectural shape If the paint is really bothering someone, there is a thing called a wire bristle brush that works well in removing flaking paint from concrete; they can purchase a wire bristle brush and remove the paint themselves instead of annoying the city and county governments with such a mundane complaint. Besides, there are many things much more important to fret about - like keeping the streets paved nicely when they need to be. Joyce M. Coomer 2014-08-21 12:11:57 | Comments | Printable version

Early Columbia - Back when we were boys - IV - Jamestown ST. In this installment Ralph Waggener takes readers out Jamestown Street and out Russell Road. The series has been a huge hit with CM readers, and this one just may be the best. It's in the territory where he grew up, on Jamestown Hill, and is sprinkled with dozens of stories you may never have heard - like how Leo Wheatley got J.D. Harper to always be open for breakfast for Leo's motel guests; how Darrell Young survived the great basketball court construction disaster, how Ralph himself jumped off he top of what is now Sheila Pyles drug store, and claimed a boyhood fortune from Mike Campbell - and many more anecdotes, mostly true and certainly true to the best of his knowledge of Ralph Roy and the fact checkers at CM. Read about some of Columbia's most fascinating personalities of the distant and not-so-distant past. Letter: There should be jobs in town Personal commentary of the writer Chris Morrison writes: I know when (Name of company - CM) came here, we paid that company to work for them or they would not move here. I think they took it out of our checks, like $15.00 a week. It's sad that we cannot have jobs in this town, I really don't know why but it it just sad that we have to travel miles away to work. I did it; traveled to Glasgow 2nd shift and I was scared to death of the deers on the parkway. But I wasn't afraid to work even if it was out of town, but its just not right that we don't have the jobs we need here in our own town. --Chris Morrisoncomments re article 69255 Pattie McClister Why Shouldn't There Be a Payroll Tax 2014-08-21 09:25:35 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
Maury poses questions on Downtown's concrete pillars? Comments re photo 56351 What should be done with concrete pillars Maury Lewis writes: What would the businesses that they are in front of like to see done with them? Thanks, Maury, for the questions: Like the way you prioritized. I hope that business owners are always consulted first. Like that you're wondering about creative reuse as a possibility, and that you wonder about the cost of removal. I'm a granddad, and I don't see a lot of safety concerns for ours jumping from the posts, but suppose there are some. Your statement reminds me of a Downtown character who once told some of us that he was buying a pair of two story cowboy boots - "So when I jump off the roof of the Firestone store I won't get hurt." And, for the record, I never saw any kid get hurt while walking the stone ledge on the Jeffries Building. - ED 2014-08-21 07:12:34 | Comments | Printable version
