A decent squirrel gun, yet working the bolt to get off three shots at incoming doves was nearly impossible for me when excited. Doves flying nearby had little to fear when I shouldered that old .410. Shortly after this was announced, we started receiving phone calls at the shop saying the business owed back taxes and this company would help us negotiate a lower bill with the state. Frances Salyers warns of scam By Frances Salyers Today I received a call from a man. He told me a truck was on the way to turn off my electricity because I had not paid my bill. He said he was from Rural Electric. I said we have Electric with Taylor County. He said well we are a co op of them, it's all the same, but if I would pay him he would stop the truck. I said I would call my electric company and see what was going on. He said well tell that to the truck when he gets there. I said I will. but he is very agressive. I called the Sheriff's department. and Taylor County Recc. But he even called me back this time using Taylor County Electric. My concern is the older people they may convince. - Frances Salyers 2014-08-07 14:01:21 | Comments | Printable version
Wet-Dry Election: Organizer requests turn in of signed petitions He needs them in hand immediately Paul Carter, organizer of the Wet-Dry election petition, is asking that anyone in possession of signed petitions turn them in immediately. "We need to know where we stand at this point," he said. Carter said that additional names may be added after this initial turn-in, but he wants to make sure that the rights of all those who have already signed are protected. He said that his group will continue accepting signatures right up to the last minute for a buffer in case any of the signatures are invalidated after they are turned in to the county court clerk. He asked to be contacted at 270-384-1650 to arrange turn-ins. 2014-08-07 13:16:51 | Comments | Printable version

Joyce Coomer: Taught to take responsibility for own safety An opposing viewpoint, answer to: Billy Joe Fudge: Yesterday, woman almost run down in crosswalk By Joyce Coomer Personal Opinion I am very near-sighted. My eyesight got bad between the fifth and sixth grades, and it was nearly a year before I convinced my mother that I really needed glasses. She made an appointment with Dr. Murphy, and when he put the huge E on the wall optometrists used to use, and asked me what it was, I replied that it was an I. (I also have astigmatism.) He said that was enough and prescribed really strong eyeglasses. I overheard my mother a month or so later telling a neighbor that Dr. Murphy told her not to let me cross the street by myself. Billy Joe Fudge: Yesterday, woman almost run down in crosswalk Just a matter of time till tragedy strikes again: At that time, our public officials will lament the tragedy and commit to correcting the deficiencies of our Downtown Roundabout. At that time, we all will mourn the loss of a friend, neighbor and family member. At that time, we will seek to justify those involved as blameless because of the "situation" in our Downtown. At that time, we will all seek to forgive and forget those from the past who failed to attend to the safety issues of their day which led to the present day "situation." - BILLY JOE FUDGE By Billy Joe Fudge Commentary endorsed by ColumbiaMagazine.com I sometimes feel like "the voice of one crying in the wilderness." However this is not about me. I have no agenda. I'm not running for office and I have no aspirations to be lauded as some "bigger than life" public figure. Just wanted to get that out of the way in the beginning. Yesterday, a lady was nearly run down on the Campbellsville Street crosswalk. In a maze of semi trucks, concrete trucks, cars and pickups whizzing onto, around and off our Downtown Square, a pickup pulling a flatbed trailer came off the Square onto Campbellsville Street, while a lady was clearly nearly halfway across the crosswalk. The gentleman driving the truck not only did not stop for the lady to cross but never even slowed down and in my personal opinion was actually accelerating upon entering, crossing and departing the crosswalk area. Just a matter of time till tragedy strikes again: At that time, our public officials will lament the tragedy and commit to correcting the deficiencies of our Downtown Roundabout. At that time, we all will mourn the loss of a friend, neighbor and family member. At that time, we will seek to justify those involved as blameless because of the "situation" in our Downtown. At that time, we will all seek to forgive and forget those from the past who failed to attend to the safety issues of their day which led to the present day "situation." As a wildland firefighter, I was trained to attend to "watch-out situations" which could lead to injury or death for my fellow firefighters and of course, me. I was taught to constantly communicate with all those involved in order to not allow ourselves to be involved in "compromising situations." Downtown Columbia is a "watch-out situation." Please, pay attention. - BJF 2014-08-07 08:21:05 | Comments | Printable version

Leader in Me program at Adair Co. Schools a giant step ahead 'After I saw Shamarie's Leader in Me photo, I drove through campus to see for myself. What a transformation!!! The campus is so very welcoming, with it's fresh "Company's Coming" look for the opening day of school next Thursday.
