Dr. James C. Salato remembered on his birthday It was a mean, lowdown Keltnertown trick Grover Gilpin played on her daddy, and her mother gave Mr. Gilpin an earful. But they remained good friends with throughout their lives (and she doesn't tell what Dr. Salato did to get even, or if he did.) It was like that in Downtown Columbia in the 1950s. Carol Salato Myers shares a couple of memories about her late father, one of most beloved Adair Countians of all time, Dr. J.C. Salato, whose birthday is today. She remembers that a number of the townspeople like to play pranks on each other when Dr. Salato first set up his practice here. Dr. Salato's was located upstairs, over Ed's Kentucky Auto Store, the present day location of Reed Bros. Insurance at 132 Public Square. JIM: Ripped from the headlines, 1944 It was a time in the worst of the World War II years. Adair County had already lost some one dozen lives in the war effort. Wrigley's Spearmint Gum was a paragon of patriotic virtue, (in sharp contrast to the greed of the companies undergoing "Inversion" today). Miss Hattie Lee Willis became owner of "The Dress Shop," beginning a decades long stand as a top Columbia clothier. Mr. Kirk had just been hired as superintendent. Two young women complete nursing training - in Louisville, KY, one of the closest opportunities they had then. The community cannery opened at the high school (an idea whose time has come again?). The Marshall dynasty had a new member, whose father was away, in WWII, and the news had a great mention of a chance meet up with another Adair Countian in England. Ripped from the headlines ends with a choke, with a story of a hero of World II who should never be forgotten. - CM Click on headline for complete article By JIM As had been the case for every edition of the Adair County News for over three and a half long, wearying years, war news dominated the front page of the Wednesday, August 2, 1944 edition. A sampling of headlines amply makes the point: Adair Soldier Killed in Italy; [Soldier] Wounded in France; 29 Called for Physical Exams; Adair Man Commissioned Lieutenant in Navy; Wallace Hancock Shot by Sniper; and Our Boys in the Service. John Ford: For free market - but applauds Somerset's solution Personal opinion John Ford writes: Dear Mr Piplaski glad to read your reply. Maybe you should re-read my response to your letter. I don't advocate that the government provide us with cheaper gas. What I suggested was to allow competition to set the market price, something that is not being allowed in Adair County because a major player in the gas business was denied access to this market place. I do applaud the solution that the Somerset government came up with because it broke up a monopolistic entity that was harming the community in my opinion. That, Mr Piplaski, using your words: 4. Promote (not provide) the General Welfare. The general welfare is harmed when a product that everyone has to have in order to function in our modern society is artificially priced because competition is not allowed to flourish. You can claim patriotism all you want, sir, but when your actions harm the general population then it appears very self serving and makes this reader question your true motive. - John FordComments re article 68876 Ed Pipalski Price objectors could open own gas stations 2014-08-04 03:17:23 | Comments | Printable version
Lila Loy captures Christ in a Manger one night in bloom This year has been a record one for the plant, which pre-dates 1988, when the Pearl Gadberry gave the plant to Lila Loy, who has nurtured it, now with the help of her son, ever since. Click on headline for complete article with photo sequence of one evening's flowering Lila Loy has a wonderful plant she was given by the late Pearl Gadberry, received before Mrs. Gadberry's death in 1988. It's called Christ in a Manger/ It blooms only at night, with the each bloom opening only one night of the year then it withers and dies. "My son Bobby Loy keeps it for me now," she writes. "There were 5 more flowers that bloomed last night. This is the first time that "Pearl" has had more than 3 or 4 blooms all year. She adds, "There were 8 blooms ready on Saturday and several more babies starting. It must just be the year with the warm and cool nights." This year Ms. Loy took a sequence of photos of the event.
