John Ford: Local government sometimes has to take initiative On the City of Somerset retail gas sales John Ford writes: It's a crying shame when communities have to resort to these kinds of tactics for the good of their citizenry, but it also shows the initiative of the local government to try to make positive changes for the good of the community. Kudos to Somerset - John FordComments re article 68851 Tired of higher gasoline prices here She buys out of town 2014-08-02 19:15:02 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary
John Ford: Offers own solution to problem of high gas prices Says consumer boycott wouldn't work, but Walmart would be a competitive factor if they were to sell gas at their Columbia store Comments re article 68864 Ed Pipalski Gives his opinion of Somerset city gas sales John Ford writes: I'm sorry Mr Pipalski but I can't agree with your assessment of the situation. These companies have more than enough money to sustain themselves, the pressure you can bring by a boycott of their brand will mean nothing to them. A better solution to this problem is to have city and county government go to Walmart and beg them to sell gas here . . .offer whatever it will take to make it a reality. I don't know what happened at the planning and zoning board meeting when Walmart was denied the gas concessions for Adair county, but whatever it was the citizens of this county were the real losers. Maybe ColumbiaMagazine can dig into this meeting and post it here so we can see for ourselves what happened. - John FordThanks John Ford: We'll look into it - but I think the decision not to sell gas was a made by private individuals. I may be wrong, but I'm fairly sure it had nothing to do with Planning & Zoning. - ED WAGGENER 2014-08-02 19:10:43 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary

Ed Pipalski: Gives his opinion of Somerset city gas sales By Ed Pipalski Personal commentary The siren song of Governmental Corporatism sounds again and very appealing , but the truth is it a economic system to be distinguished from political system of, wait for it... Fascism. Yes, the "F" word. Free Markets allow consumers to choose to do business elsewhere, out of town for a price; loss of convenience. The cost of convenience is a few pennies more. Another consumer tactic is a Boycott. Imagine had the people of Somerset conducted a boycott of a particular brand of gasoline or only did business with a certain brand for 60-days. Tailgater caught unaware flipping off this wee lass in pink Taurus A true story: There is justice for some road ragers Comment about - Tailgating: Wrong righteous driver flashes bird at law abider By JD Gee Heidi Caron's op-ed about drivers on 55 ignoring the speed limit elicited howls of laughter. Not that the situation she addresses is funny because, seriously, no, it isn't; it's anything but funny. It did, however, spark a memory of a tale relayed to me years ago by a life long friend - a wee slip of lass, she is - who lived in Louisville at the time. Tired of higher gasoline prices here: She buys out of town Personal Commentary: Writer advocates a Somerset Solution, with municipal ownership, management of gas outlet and drives out of town to buy. (We buy locally from Lynn's Service Center, who's operating a landmark, historic business, is a good neighbor, and I remember Sue Stivers' words, 'I continue to work so I'll be able to have someone else pump my gas.' At Lynn's a thriving last-of-a-kind business, they not only pump my gas, they wash the windshield, check the oil, give asked for advice, come pick up my vehicle when it breaks down, and bring a battery when mine is dead - so I'll stick with him for the pennies more I might pay on the gallon. His prices are dictated by suppliers - and that is an issue. But Heidi's point may appeal to others, more. -EW) By Heidi Caron Personal Commentary Somerset recently started to buy gas directly from the refinery and cutting out the middle man. The town built their own 40,000 gal storage facility with 10 pumps for not only city vehicles, but residents as well. As a result, local merchants have dropped the price of gas significantly. Tailgating: Wrong righteous driver flashes bird at law abider A story with a moral, maybe: Does "Jesus Love You" even if you drive at top of the speed limit? Tailgating speeder with "Jesus Loves You" bumper sticker flashes the bird, righteously declaring, later, that the speed limit is 55 mph on KY 55 S. It isn't as high as 55, writer notes, anywhere between the Speedway Store, in Columbia going South until the Gaddie-Shamrock Quarry at Zion, near KY 55 S & KY 92 turnoff there. She'd like to see more law enforcement in the stretch of road. - CM Commentary by Heidi Caron My husband was driving north on KY 55S one day when a man in a car behind him began to tailgate him and finally passed him in front of the Roadside Park.
