Shame on person who trashed Burkesville Road Litter strewn from bridge over Petty's Fork all the way up through Grider Hill Pass By Victoria Pike This afternoon I was amazed at the mess of papers someone dumped or lost out on Burkesville Road just before you get to Walmart. Now SHAME ON YOU. Stuff that dated back to the 1960s with school papers and notebook paper scattered all up the hill from the bridge. Now if you were hauling it to the transfer station, you had to see what you lost on the way back. This is a black eye on our community and we all would appreciate it if you lost this stuff, please come pick it up. Again, Shame on you. - Victoria Pike 2014-07-31 17:16:03 | Comments | Printable version

Agrees: Vandalism is a disgrace Wonders if same miscreants damaged buildings at the Fairground Jennifer Carter writes: I agree with Joe Hare it is a disgrace that people have no respect for others or their property. It is highly possible that the person (s) that took the statue also are responsible for the vandalism that has been happening at the fairgrounds for several months now. They damaged our stage background, wrote on the concrete, poles and tables. Tore down and stole a light on the pavilion and within the past two weeks someone damaged our bleachers. There is constant trash being left and items broken under the pavilion. We cannot stay on the grounds all hours of the day and night to watch the property we use for events for the public to enjoy. I hope the VFW finds their statue returned undamaged and the vandalism stops! Kelli Bonifer: Make your own salsa Tomatoes are plentiful now. One great value-added table tomato product, salsa can be made for immediate use, or to preserve for later use. To safely can salsa at home, you have to use proper food preservation techniques. If preserved incorrectly, the salsa could not only taste bad but also result in botulism, a deadly food-borne illness caused by toxins produced by bacteria in the canned food. Click on headline for complete column By Kelli Bonifer Tomatoes are now in season, and soon you might have more on your hands than you know what to do with. A great way to use excess tomatoes, peppers, onions and other ingredients is by making salsa you can enjoy fresh now, or preserve for use throughout the year. Sue Stivers Commentary: Thoughts are the Seeds Of Reality What we think about our community is what we will become. Sue Stivers sites just a few of the positive attributes and plans for Columbia/Adair County: More people moving here. Increased interest in agriculture brought by farmers markets. Expanded vision of many clubs and organizations. Churches to serve those of all faiths. Lindsey Wilson College and its students. New educational opportunities and pathways. The Trail Town Initiative. This, she says, is just a small part of what is going on here. She invites readers make their own list of what's right and Think Positive about Columbia-Adair County. See this and more of Chamber Insights - July 2014 By Sue C. Stivers I tell youth that what they think about is what they will become. I really believed it and still do. I believe the same thing about our Community and County. If we tell ourselves we are second rate, or we can't do or have so and so, we are. If we collectively believe we have the world by the tail, we do. If you believe everything you read or hear on the street that is negative about Columbia and Adair County, we're doomed.
