Art teacher Campbell will create Columbian mural

2023-03-20 - Columbia, KY - Photo From Dr. Ben Arnold.
Darlene Campbell, Adair County teacher, writer, and artist will be creating a mural in the entrance to the newly renovated Columbian Theatre as it gets final touches in preparation of its opening this spring.

Campbell shares about going the extra mile in her art classes, "All week I'm teaching on Frida Kahlo. To make it more real for the students, I'm dressing a bit like her each day!

"Frida Kahlo was a Mexican-German artist born just outside Mexico City in 1907. Born with spina-bifida, crippled by polio, severely injured in a motor vehicle accident which left her unable to bear children, she endured 38 surgeries and unimaginable pain, yet she still became the first Mexican artist to have her work displayed at the Luve in Paris and quite possibly the most famous female artist of the twentieth century, besides maybe her American counterpart, Georgia O'Keefe.

"The children have loved learning about the little girl with special needs, a love of anatomy, an understanding of symbolism and an enduring spirit. She died in 1954 at the age of 47. Her body never completely healed of the horrific injuries she had suffered and she had never known what it was like to be free."
