Kentucky Color: New Friend

2021-12-02 - Great Wooded South - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
By Billy Joe Fudge

The really great thing about traipsing over hill and dell in the Great Wooded South is the new friends you can make. While taking a break from cruising timber on the north slope of the Leatherwood Creek watershed, this young male bovine walked right up close to introduce himself. I said, "Hey big boy, what you doing?" He replied by continuing to chew his cud in the most calm and collected manner.

For quite a spell we continued the conversation with non-verbal glances and benign, physical posturing. Finally I stood and explained that I had a prior appointment and would have to depart. He seemed to understand.

As I departed, I turned to see him with half his harem following at a distance as if they were wishing me safe travels. I'll be back in his neighborhood on Friday. I hope he stops by for a chat.
