Cherokee

2020-12-17 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Horses always capture my attention because of their grace and beauty and horses painted up like this one always make me wonder if it's Cherokee, the favorite horse in all the world of my Mom. We could never pass a horse like this, with its strong white and brown markings, without her remembering him and wishing she'd never let him go, of all the farm animals in all the years, she missed him most. Cherokee who ate watermelon out of her hand and nickered to her for more, Cherokee who raced her across rocky fields in Sulphur Well farmland, Cherokee who she'd always say was about fifteen hands high. There were other horses, Lady and Molly and more, but it was Cherokee who kept a constant place in her heart all her life. And they both keep a constant place in mine. - LW
