A new puppy

2020-03-14 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The expressions in this picture make it one of my favorites from the last visit to Shelbyville. The little white puff in the arms of grandson Evan is at the heart of those expressions. Anyone reading this who has ever had a new puppy can relate to the absolute fun and total chaos they cause. Evan and his friend Savannah brought puppy - yet to be formally named - in as a surprise rescue. Shock is more like it - parents, older and younger siblings and resident adult dog were all stunned and in various stages of acceptance, or not, when I arrived. The one most clear about non-acceptance was the adult dog resident, Churchill, who growled, barked and had to be held back from all out attack. The one who was most delighted was 8-year-old Hailey who would do anything for "Pablo" she calls him, maybe even learn to help Ev clean up accidental puppy poo from the new floors. I shared with them the experience of the Dwain Harris family who recently hired a puppy trainer - a three-week-school in Somerset - to bring calm back to their household. Mom Sharon Harris says it works!
