Richard Phelps has portrayed many individuals during past Silent City programs but this year he was able to play a beloved member from his wife Mary Beth's side of the family. John D. Lowe Sr. (1865-1932) may not have been a been a native of Columbia but he definitely made a mark on the community. As a young man, Mr. Lowe arrived in town and began selling shoes for the Murray Dibrell Co. - a job which he kept for 35 years. He eventually married Sally Smith and had three children: Mary Lucy Lowe, Mrs. Rollin Cundiff, and John D. Lowe Jr. Mr. Lowe was an incredibly productive citizen of the area: helping develop the bank, the school once located in the center of town, and very active in the Columbia Christian Church. His obituary summed his life up best with the statement, "He was a citizen of public spirit, interested in many enterterprizes for the betterment of humanity."
