Kentucky Color: Winter Oak/Hickory Forest Scene 2019-01-08 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge. Billy writes, "Hickory, especially the Shagbark Hickory seen on the left of the picture is one of the most recognizable Hardwood species during the winter months. Here in the Great Wooded South it is most often referred to as Scalybark Hickory. It has the largest nut of all the upland hickory species. The Mockernut Hickory is a close second and you guessed it. It received that name because it is a tightbark Hickory which typically has much smaller nuts but "mocks" the size and shape of the Shagbark Hickory nut. The Shellbark Hickory has the largest nut of any Hickory and again, here in the Great Wooded South, it is most times referred to as the River Hickory. River Hickory, as the name suggests is a Bottomland Hardwood Forest species. The tree in the center of the picture is a Southern Red Oak and is the most plentiful Upland Hardwood Forest Oak. As a general rule around these parts, Red Oak is the third most valuable species behind Black Walnut and White Oak. However, White Ash will sometimes slip in there and beat it out for third.
