Appropriately at High Noon, Wednesday, September 5, 2018, where Dollar General Store is adding another outlet in the Discount Variety Store face off with national rival Dollar Tree, it's making Columbia kind of Ground Zero. With the long axis of the store parallel to Jamestown Road, the new DG store has an imposing presence seen from the Bypass. The store is the third for the chain in Columbia. The parent Dollar Tree company, has one store open now, Family Dollar Store, recently renovated, and is building its first Adair County store with the Dollar Tree badge. Nationwide, the two Discount Variety Store chains are considered equals since Dollar Trees successful acquisition bid for Family Dollar. Unlike Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties, Dollar General has not yet opened stores in the village centers out in the county. Next store strategy seems to be as closely held, as surprising, as game stategies in athletics. In Russell County, Dollar General's latest construction is in Esto, just four miles from Jamestown's Dollar Market, and almost as close to Russell Springs. - EW Permalink | Comments?
