Epicurean Kentuckian: Tillie's food news, summer 2018

2018-07-23 - Louisville, KY - Photo from family collection.
Seven-year-old granddaughter Matilda Anne is proud of her home gardening this summer. She's also enjoyed travels and foods in different places. She told me that she'd recently had a good trip that included her discovery of a love of "chicken and dumplings." Tillie said she liked the dumplings and the creaminess of the chicken in gravy. I shared with her my own lifetime love of the dish and suggested she might want to try blackberry dumplings, too, first discovered in a potluck dish brought to an event by Thelma Hatcher, I think. At the time, it was news to me that you could do anything other than chicken with dumplings, but I was sold the moment I tasted them with blackberries. Tillie confirmed that she does love blackberries and said, "Hmmm, I might just give that a try." - Linda Waggener
