Wild - and not wild - flowers of KY: The high & the low of phlox

These two pictures spotlight differences and similarities of Wild Sweet William, left, and the not-wild Phlox on the right. The bluer family member on the left, woodland Phlox, grows wild in clumps in lightly shady areas, especially creek side. Wild Sweet William blossoms grow on stems six or eight inches tall. The warmer lavender Phlox pictured at right is a low-to-ground, carpet Phlox version, planted by gardeners. All the Phlox varieties are appreciated as they bring spring to life. - LW
