Wishing you an Audrey-style violet week ahead 2018-04-09 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. These sweet violets remind me of my favorite, lovely, patient, kind mother-in-law Audrey Lee Chelf Waggener, who grew varying colors of violets year-round at her Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY home. As long as I knew her, her devotion to her family, the Columbia Baptist Church and her violets were constant. Her daughter Fay McKinley and granddaughter Mitzi Bault inherited her love of them and continue the family tradition. I was sorry to have come into the family too late to have known Mrs. Waggener's husband, my husband Ed's father, E.P. He sounds like someone I'd have enjoyed debating, especially the importance of growing more honeysuckle while he was known to have defended the necessity of chopping every sprig of it from their fencerows. Even when she'd remember how he vexed her at times, Mrs. Waggener's love of him would shine through when she'd recall scolding him and say something to me like, "how I'd love for him to walk in that door again and drape his jacket over one chair, his tie over another, kick off his shoes under another, socks tossed..." etc., all for her to pick up and clean and have ready for him to go back out to work the next morning.
