Mike Watson sends these photos of Poke Berries growing in the city, which we're posting in hopes some entrepreneur will be inspired to start a Great American Poke Berry Ink factory - Maybe not in time for this years Homeplace on Green River or Re-visit Knifley events, but maybe next year. Most Appalachians think of Poke as a greens delicacy (though a warning: precise 'biling' protocols are essential to keep from being pizened. It's said to be toxic in it's raw state), but in keeping with a notion inspired by an NPR Driveway Moment piece kelp farm is made profitable by using and selling every part of it in someway, Scientists Hope To Farm The Biofuel Of The Future In The Pacific Ocean about successful cultivation and use of kelp, first as food, then for all its other uses. And then by remembering the work of a local thinker, Larry Legg who imagined the possibilities for selling sawdust and created a major industry in South Central Kentucky for a byproduct of the timber business. - EW Permalink | Comments?
