Best Buddies - Gene & Jakky

Jakky is not Gene Hoots dog, but you'd never know it from this photo. Perhaps the town's most famous long-haired Dachshund, Jakky (pronounced "Jakey," but a friend wrote it "Jakky" and the spelling was honored), Jakky is the pet of Columbia City Council Member, former Mayor, and print and broadcast journalist Pam Hoots. Yes, Gene Hoots is still Adair County's leading town gardener; and yes, he does still have tomatoes for sale at his home on Tutt Street, and yes, he is a quite active octagenarian, whose legend, already established, gains new entries with each passing day. - EW
