Flowers: Bright, happy Glads on Liberty Road/KY 206

The only thing to add beauty to the already extraordinary hills and valleys of south central Kentucky is a surprising colorful blossom to make us take a second look. These fiery orange Gladioli, sometimes called a sword lily, were simply "Glads" when I was growing up. And they were pink and they were "Isabelle's Glads," so named by my Grandma Leftwich who called them that because her daughter Caroline Isabelle Sandidge, the teacher, made a fine small garden easily seen from the kitchen table. Isabelle was one of Grandma's nine children who followed her older sister to California, married her sweetheart Welby, a construction worker with a job there. They had two sweet sons, Donald and Welby Jan, but then, tragically, Welby passed away and she came back to live and raise their sons at home in Edmonton. Isabelle made things brighter at the Edmonton Leftwich house in many ways, including her flower garden.
