Box Turtle crossing Mt. Tussell Road 2017-07-05 - Mt. Tussell Road, not far north of Knifley, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com photo(c). This box turtle - often called a terrapin in these parts - was hustling toward safety as we approached, but went inside as we got nearer. Seeing him brought up some memories and questions: 1) The memory was of Southern Kentucky 'terrapin' fancier Bob Shirley, of Edmonton, who rescued the animals and took them to a sanctuary at his home. 2) The question of whether the turtle was on his way to the mystical Mt. Tussell, which no one, yet, has identified. There is a Mt. Tussell Road. So surely there is a Mt. Tussell? and 3) While we've found out that these guys have many predators, with raccoons be the worst, but including cats who prey on their babies, whether or not any humans make them part of their diet. Couldn't find any specific 'box turtle' recipes but did find one survivalist warning that they eat poison mushrooms, and warned not to eat them.
