The Changing Face of Oak Street: 17 Jun 2017 2017-06-18 - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c). No judgment here. We're awaiting what will happen here next. But one of the last buildings of what was once (one of, or 'the') most important employers Adair County's was being razed yesterday, marking perhaps, the final reminder, besides residences, of a wonderful era when the timber/woods products sector was at the center of Adair County industry. Perhaps you know the business. Perhaps the sight triggers a memory of the noon siren atop the historic Adair County Courthuse was a reminder of either the start or end of lunch - dinner in those days. Perhaps the scene triggers memories of those three colossal conflagrations which would have ended the enterprise represented here except that disasters never seemed to daunt the amazing indomitable character of the family. Perhaps you'll remember an era when print media was one of the biggest employers in Adair County, and the significance of the blue building's site then, and a father who died too young, but left a legacy of leadership and entrepreneurship which is shaping Columbia and Adair County even today. Maybe you will remember, and comment, maybe not. The new, we hope, will be even better than the hallowed past. But it's important to remember. That's what today is about. - EW Permalink | Comments?
