AC School Board: A great night for veteran member Mike Harris

2017-06-16 - Adair County School District Conference Room, 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c).
Great teachers make great schools Mike Harris, who has represented School Board Division 5 working, now, with four superintendents, was elated with the choice of Dr. Pam Stephens to lead the system for the next four years. Harris has championed the transformation of the campus and the program of continuously upgrading facilities. He said in interviews after the meeting that he appreciates Supt. Stephens' continuation of those programs. And, he said, he is very supportive of her involvement in every aspect of student life. "She stepped in when we needed experienced leadership and did a very good job," he said. "She visits all the schools regularly, she checks all the grounds on the campus regularly, and she's involved in the community." But one thing stood out to Harris, "She is never afraid to tackle tough issues. She wasn't afraid to put teachers first, to make a major change in their compensation, and what we've seen since has confirmed the wisdom of that. We can have great facilities, great technology, great everything, but what we have to have to be a great school district are great teachers. We're already seeing great teachers formerly in the system who left being applying to return, and that is the answer to a great hope for our schools." He said he was very happy Dr. Stephens was willing to lead at this time. - EW
