Fledgling 6th grade aerospace engineers test spacecraft

Campbellsville Middle School sixth-grader Weston Mattingly tests his group's spacecraft. In Jan Speer's sixth-grade science classes, students participated in a NASA design challenge in which they were asked to build a shock-absorbing system. The challenge was to build a spacecraft that falls the greatest distance while keeping two astronauts - in the form of marshmallows - safe.Students were given cardboard, paper, cups, rubber bands, straws, scissors, tape and other items to make their spacecrafts. After designing and building their structures, students tested them to see which structure could safely fall from the highest distance. - Calen McKinney
