Motorists are now enjoying first rides on the first segment of the upgraded KY 55 now designated as the Heartland Parkway today, September 1, 2016, in what is called a 2+1 design, with three continuous cross sections with alternating passing lanes. Shoulder widths and overall widths of the road bed varies widely. The right now paved shoulder here is five feet. Markings and signage give attentive motorists good instructions, but driving the road is more complicated than perhaps any other road in Adair County. In many ways, however, it is similar to the stretch of U.S. 127 between Russell Springs and Jamestown, KY, and improvement over a two lane highway, but not the best solution. The new speed signs going up - maybe installed by now, designate 55 mph, which is likely safe. Add on Kentuckians interpretation of the real speed limit as posted speed plus 9 miles an hour, heavy traffic, and/or fog, snow, or a downpour, and the design of the road can be problematic without intensive driver education.The coming Labor Day Week could be an early test of the parkway's safety. - EW Permalink | Comments?
