Bruce Wilson brought a tray of heirloom tomatoes by two days ago. This may be as good as it gets in Adair County. Wouldn't trade a three-eighths inch center slice from that big one would for any prime rib dinner Hasenour's ever put on a table. That center slice would be a meal by itself, and a very good nominee for one's last meal on earth or first in heaven. The big deal is taste & texture. The flavor, in a word, is intense. The texture is firm, but yields to fork and knife for clean cuts. These have it - taste and texture - and they are grown organically. That being said, homegrown tomatoes in these area are the very best in the world. The availability at local farmers markets and roadside stands has been outstanding this year, and there may still be a few more days before the peels get tough, the flavor changes, and the days of tomato euphoria will be over. The bananas and pear are just for show and to illustrate a big difference in the real thing. Mr. Dole put a sticker on his fruit. Too much packaging for me, and for those who don't like shrink wrapped plums or ink-jet flyers with every potato. Basic is best. They weren't grown in Adair County. - EW Permalink | Comments?
