Throughout Adair County at this time of the year, the catkins of the American Chestnut tree give the forest a soft pleasant sparkle amid the greenery. Here in Columbia, our urban forest includes this striking example. And it comes with a story. The late Edith Cundiff Walker, a truly great, Renaissance Rural Kentucky Woman, had the vision to plant the tree several decades ago. It would be so wonderful were she to be alive today to see the fruits of her labors, and to let us tell her in person, Thank you, Dean Walker. The house is one we lived in for a season, a house where the Adair County Inauguration was planned, and the site of a garden party attended by Janice and Henry Giles when Mrs. Giles' chose the headline font for the soon to be launched Columbia Statesman which later became The Daily Statesman. It was, in our memory, too, the house where our oldest son was taken to stay while the working journalist of the family covered a devastating tornado. Oldest son's state was entertaining, to say the least. He was fascinated by the Walker family cat. Edith Walker said that he chased it most of the evening before falling asleep, but the cat was never in danger.
