Catalpa Trees beginning to bloom 2016-05-10 - Taylor County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c). Catalpa Trees are beginning to blossom now in south central Kentucky. This one was found in the Green River Lake visitors area where native trees are designated with information about the species, very handy! The designation in front of the Catalpa tree reads: "Catalpas are soft, weak, and brittle with very good decay resistance and stability. Mainly used for fence posts, rails, beams and crating. Also good for turned articles and carving due to softness and stability. Other uses include millwork, framing, forms, furniture, drawer slides and general purpose construction." The back story is that it's a favorite here. They grow in our yard and one ancient, leaning Catalpa tree which has had many traumas over the years and many good times inviting children to climb on it, still puts out new leaves every spring and works to shade us, so we count it as a dependable member of the family. -- LW Permalink | Comments?
